Will Wright's Spore - who's still excited?

Alright, so it was supposed to come out in time for Xmas 2006, but they pushed it back. The current release date on GameSpot is June 2007, and I’m praying that’s right because I’m still excited and eager for this game. Anyone else?

Yup! Very excited.

If my computer is not up to the technical requirements, I will buy a new computer.

This game is something I’ve literally wanted since I became aware of computer games.

Same here. My current system is, I think, four years old, so I’m more or less ready to replace it. I’ll probably use the recommended configuration for this game as a template for the next system.

I’ve read a lot about Spore, watched lots of videos, talked to people involved in it’s production, and honestly… I’m still not sure where the fun part comes in. Lots of neat ideas, but from what I’ve read/seen/heard so far, there’s a big gaping hole in the middle that should be filled with gameplay.

'Course, I feel exactly the same way about The Sims, and we all know what a spectacular failure that turned out to be, so my opinion probably doesn’t count for much.

Um…you DO know you can blow up planets and create weird mutant creatures, right?
Seriously though, it looks very exciting, however I am concerned that while it borrows elements from FPS games, God games like Populous and Black&White, SimCity and Civilization, it may manage to be watered down, sucky versions of all of those games.

My computer is fairly up-to-date, but I think that by the time Spore actually comes out, it will be obsolete.

Honestly, if the game had come out 5 or 6 months after the initial videos, I would have rushed out to the store. I think everyone would have clamored for this game, and it would have been a blockbuster title. As it stands, though, I probably won’t buy it immediately.

I’ve developed a “oh, it will never get released, but if it does then I’ll wait and see how buggy and sucky it really is before I maybe buy it” attitude. YMMV.

I was completely obsessed with SimCity, but not at all with The Sims, so I’ll buy this game in the hope that I can recapture the magic I found in SimCity.

You can blow up planets in “Master of Orion III” but it was a terrible game. You could make weird creatures in Photoshop.

The jury is still out as to whether the GAME will be any good. Watching the demo, it looked remarkably non-fun, a game that was a jack of all trades and a master of none. But, it might be a lot better by release. Maybe that’s why it was delayed.

It’s hard enough to get ANY of the game types right. Getting them all right in one box will be a miracle.

I’m afraid I must agree with Miller. Reluctantly, I also foresee a disconnect in the gameplay aspect. Much like The Sims, it’s a neat idea with gameplay so boring I could die. I think The Sims appeals to the same people who liked playing house and dress-up as children. So, girls and gay guys. That’s really all it is, after all, a glorified doll house. I want to like Spore just as much as I wanted to like The Sims (no, you didn’t just see me playing with my dolls again), but I won’t know until I give it a chance. Building creatures and seeing the creatures others build ought to be neat, but so far that seems to be the only focus, with the added elements of:

  1. surviving as a microorganism
  2. becoming an animal
  3. building little villages of your animals
  4. defending against and/or propogating your own space forces
  5. becoming God and starting all over again on another planet

I’m really hoping there’s more of a hook to the gameplay than we’ve been shown thus far, because I think it’s a bit flat as it is.

More of a hook?! I’d buy the game based on your description alone!

Plus, Wil Wright has a good history of following through on his designs (unlike, say, Peter Molyneux). Living up to pre-release hype is next to impossible, but Wright is a great developer, so I expect him to release something decent and fun. Even if it doesn’t meet all expectations, I fully expect to enjoy Spore.

Put me in the I’ll pre-order it as soon as possible. I have it my Amazon notify list already.

Yeah…The Sims is pretty gay
The thing is, I like SimCity because you basically can create this massive, organic living city that has complexity on many levels. Same thing with Civilization on a planetary level. I’m not seeing that in Spore right now. The cities look like big dumb plopped icons. Ideally, I’d like to see basically a scaled down planet covered with SimCity style urban and rural landscapes.

I am still totally excited - seems like a new-age SimLife? - but I agree, I’m also a little apprehensive that there will be little to no appreciable gameplay outside of the sandbox. I’m hoping at least for a healthy compliment of missions that unlock things (something like that 90’s game with the space station and memaus…dammit, what was it called?), or a storyline (Black and White?).
I will buy it anyway if it doesn’t have those, but I really hope it will :frowning:

The big gimmick for this game, and the aspect that’s been so emphasized in the demos, is that you can do anything you want in this game. But really, all the demos have proven is that the programmer can do anything he wants in this game. But then, that’s true of every game. The real test is going to be whether the game allows you to do things the programmer didn’t think of, and we’re not going to know whether that’s the case, or to what extent, until after it’s released and a lot of folks have played it.

You know what, after thinking about the gameplay issues and stuff brought up in this thread, I’ve decided I’m going to hold out for Spore 2.

I’ve seen Robin Williams playing this game with ease.

If Mork can do it, so can I.

I was enthralled initially, and I’m still looking forward to it but as with major motion picture release delays, the more time it takes to drop the more I am meh.
Daikatana anyone?

I’ve been looking forward to it. If it’s done well, it’s the Game You’ve Always Wanted. If it’s not, it could be a very good springboard towards That Game.

It’s going to be …I don’t want to use this word, but…epic. It could signal new expectations for video games.

It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks. The game when it comes out will stand for itself.

(personally I’m excited)

It has potential but yes, it’ll really come down to whether it REALLY delivers on each of those gameplay aspects, or it feels like a series of silly minigames with poor interface other than, “poof, I designed this silly thing and now I can watch it run around, and then… poof! I designed a silly building, now I can watch my silly thing run in and out of my silly building”. I’m not sure it will deliver on IMMERSION in to the game, which for this sort of thing will be crucial.

(on a total side note, I thought Master of Orion II was a pretty good game, and III wasn’t too bad either, IMO)
