Sports jerseys with your own name on them. Lame?

Pretty much what it says in the title. With Cadillac Williams gone from Tampa, my Buccaneers jersey has to be retired. I’m a little leery of the chances that the players I like will be on the team for more than a year or two, and I’m not dropping $170 on a football jersey every year.

So, would it be lame to get my own name and number on one?

Actually you’re not required to “retire” your jersey of a player you liked just because he no longer plays for that team. (Though you might confuse people if you wore it to a game between the former and current teams.)

I still wear my Sterling Sharpe jersey, and he’s been out of football for over 15 years. My Favre jersey, however, will likely not be worn again. I think some of it depends on the player.

And I kinda think your own name on a jersey isn’t necessarily lame, but it’s not something I would ever do.

I think jerseys with your own name on them are extraordinarily lame. They read like a gift that your HR department or out of state grandma got you. It makes you look like you’re either a fan of the logo and colors or worse yet delusional enough to think you’re part of the team. It’s the kind of thing that you would expect of a 8 year old.

Jerseys of old retired players that are obviously authentically from the era in which they played are the best possible scenario. Wearing the jersey of a current player is perfectly fine, but it tends to lack originality and make you look like you are a tourist who just stopped in the gift shop on the way in.

Of course old jerseys are a double edged sword, evidenced by my authentic Mark Prior jersey.

Yeah. It’s lame. You can get the jersey of a franchise player, either past or present, and that’ll keep. Anything less is doomed to be worn ironically.

Yes, lame. Only exception is if it has a goofy nickname and someone gave it to you. Buying it yourself and putting your name on makes you look like a kid wannabe.

If I were ever to get an Eagles jersey, I think I’d opt for Brian Dawkins, Reggie White, or Keith Byars.

I still have a (no name, just the number) #4 UCF jersey that I bought during Alex Haynes’ junior season…

Exceptionally lame. Why not get a throwback jersey? Those are timeless…even if you will look like an orange creamsicle.

Yeah, get a Lee Roy Selmon jersey and call it a day.

It’s lame.

What’s also lame is what the NFL was promoting in their commercials–getting customized jerseys that say stuff like “Cool Brees” or “Summer Brees.” Want to rep Drew Brees? GET A FREAKING JERSEY WITH THE NAME “BREES” ON THE BACK.

Omni, I’ve always made a point of not buying the jerseys the NFL wants to sell - the 1-4 names (depending on the team) that are in every sporting goods store in the country. I bought the Williams jersey because I loved the guy in college and was rooting for us to draft him for about two and a half seasons before he actually became eligible.

Before Cadillac, I had a #26 Dwight Smith jersey. I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in America with that one (a nickelback-turned-safety).

You’d think that right now I’d have an embarrassment of riches, with the Buccaneers having a ton of young rising stars. However, I’m not getting a Josh Freeman jersey (quarterback jerseys are too popular), LeGarrette Blount (not at all convinced he’s going to last long in the league), Mike Williams (by the end of this year he’ll either be out of the league or he’ll have the second best selling jersey on the team), Earnest Graham (always about three seconds from becoming a cap casualty, plus he’s a Gator), Kellen Winslow (that guy’s just a straight-up douche) or any lineman (too big, can’t identify with them).

That leaves linebackers, corners and safeties. We have about 14 decent linebackers and safeties and no really good ones, which means whoever I pick will probably be cut in the offseason. We have one corner (Aqib Talib) who won’t be on the team once his rookie contract expires, assuming he’s not in prison anyway, and another (Ronde Barber) who will be collecting Social Security by the time the next CBA takes effect.

I would have gotten Tanard Jackson (FS), but he’s suspended through the start of the regular season and might end up being cut after that.

The retired franchise player idea is good, but let’s face it, the Bucs don’t exactly have an embarrassment of riches in that area. It’s Lee Roy Selmon (lineman, not gonna happen) or a bunch of guys who haven’t even been retired long enough to be HoF eligible. I guess I could go with Ricky Bell, but… no.

I might just bite the bullet and get a Mason Foster (probably our new MLB) jersey, but that guy’s going to be a star, and everyone else will have it too.

I prefer this.

Interesting takes on this issue. My sister-in-law is a big cowboys fan. A few of her family members actually played for them in the past. My brother got married last year, and I was thinking it would be nice to get her a jersey with her new last name on it. Would that be lame too?

Yes, unless her new last name is “Staubach,” “Aikman,” “Irvin,” “Smith,” or “Hayes.”

You jersey hipster.

Never mind. I just realized what I’m going to do - get a #24 Kevin Fucking Smith Bucs jersey and sit back and wait for free agency to take its course.

I saw a kid with a faded Packers George Koonce jersey at McDonald’s once. That was pretty awesome.

So only spend 20 bucks. Google “chinese football jerseys” and pick one of the results. I’ve bought from several of them, and gotten the identical product as what the NFL is hanging you by the nuts for. Seriously…no difference in quality or patchwork at all. You just have to muddle through some Engrish on the site.

Ah-hah…I thought I had started a thread about this once before…

Will they let you put that on there?

It’s quite common in the UK to get your nickname on the back of a football shirt. It’s also common to go with your favourite player.

This is why I have a rule not to have an active player on a jersey. After sitting there watching Judas-scum Dwight Yorke I vowed never again.

So my Villa jerseys are unadorned, my Packers’ one is Bart Starr (don’t think it likely he will be playing for another team), and for the Cubbies I have Grace & Sandberg.
