I just saw a trailer for the “Pearl Harbor” movie, due out soon. It reminded me that I had heard of a sports stadium named after a US pilot who lost his life during the Pearl Harbor attack - one of the few who was able to get airborne. I think it was a college football stadium, but it could have been a venue for some other sport. I cannot remember the name or location - can someone help me remember?
At the time, it struck me that - in this era of “Transworld domes” and “dot-com Stadiums” - there is a better way of naming public facilities.
The University of Iowa’s football stadium is named after Nile Kinnick, who died in WWII, but not at Pearl Harbor.
Sports venues have long been named after war heroes, but usually in the collective. That’s why there are places like the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena and a plethora of War Memorial Stadiums throughtout the country.
This doesn’t answer the OP directly but Whiteman AFB (home of the stealth bombers) was named after a Sedalia MO native who was one of the first killed while trying to get his plane in the air during Pearl Harbor. I’ll poke around the web to see if some nearby schools have a sports venue named for him.
