I’m not a huge fan, but he is a great storyteller and I really liked the stripped-down versions of the songs in the show. Made me want to get the Audible version of Born To Run.
I got a big laugh out of his confession about writing Racing In The Street when he didn’t even know how to drive.
Springsteen got a special Tony award for this show, and his performance on the broadcast was marvelous. Since he obviously has a Grammy, and he got an Oscar for the song Philadelphia, ihe this one gets an Emmy he’ll join the EGOT club.
I loved it, though I did think that it went a little long at the end while skipping a ton of years in the middle, including his first break and the whole stadium-filling years.
Anyway, it was amazingly personal and my husband and I both found ourselves crying through the more tender moments. I can’t believe that he put himself out there night after night without going crazy.
I wondered if his wife joined him every night or if that was a special appearance because it was being filmed, but after some internet research, it appears that she did. Wow. I’m amazed that she made the trek every night for what was ultimately a very brief appearance singing background. I guess I would have been a tad put out had they used his stage as a forum to promote her, but I do think that they could have very poignantly worked in her singing, “I know something about love” in the background as he told the story of the first time they met.
Anyway, my husband was surprised that he was raised Catholic because he thought that “Springsteen” was Jewish.
I’m also reading his book now, and while some of the stories are almost verbatim from the show, there’s a lot more information and I’m quite enjoying it, even though I can’t say that I’m an uber-fan. I’m about 1/4 of the way through and there are some very amusing stories, including how he initially scored with the girls by teaching himself how to dance well. He practiced alone in his room in front of the mirror a la “Dancing in the Dark.” I remember thinking that he was a pretty good dancer in that video, which was a nice surprise because I know tons of musicians who can play an instrument well, even drums, who oddly cannot (or will not) dance.
Actually, the book came first. So the stories he tells during the live show came from the book, not the other way around. And he tells a story in the book about how his “Dancing In The Dark” video embarrasses the hell out of his daughter, who complains about his horrible dancing.
