Square Dancing: Am I the only one?

It seems I like square dancing. When I was a kid, once a year, my (private) school would have a square dance, and it was always really fun! People of all ages would interact, and there was light and fun and energy and snax, and I looked forward to it every year. Everyone on here seems to hate it, as a search only turns up threads bemoaning “hicks” or high school gym class. A google search doesn’t turn up square dance events as community get-togethers, just dances for senior citizens who join clubs exclusively for square dancing. Is this tradition dead?

Try searching for “contra” dancing. It’s very alive in my area (Philadelphia).

Also, any Jane Austen fans who love the group dances of that era should check out “English Country Dancing”. I recently attended a dance held by the Germantown Country Dancers and it was a lot of fun!

I like square dancing fine, but I tend to like most dancing. True square dancing isn’t as popular as it once was. Many country bars and lounges that used to feature square dancing now cater more to line dancing and two-step music.

I guess it comes and goes. If I just HAD to, I think I could check around and find a place somewhere within a reasonable distance to go square dancing, but then I’m located out in the sticks.
