Guess who’s going to happen to be in the Twin Cities for the beginning of State Fair? Mmmm…fried cheese curds…
They’re not squeaky, but they sure are good.
uglyduckling:
Carr is the one that delivers to the gas station. I was going to provide some other places that have great curd also, but they don’t offer it for shipping.
A hint:
Try 10 seconds of microwave time to warm curd up a little, and make it tastier. Don’t over nuke it. Enjoy the cheese.
:dubious: We don’t need any infidel lubricant!!
Take it from a Cheesehead. Don’t put your curds in the fridge. Keep them in a cool place, but if you don’t eat them in 48 hours or so, they’re not worth keeping anymore. Fridge and long-term storage removes the squeak and they turn salty, although I you can could melt them to make a sauce or do the deep-fried trip (see link below).
For the same reasons, don’t bother to buy curds from a grocery store, unless they have an in-store cheese factory. By the time they show up near the Kraft Plastic-Wrapped Pretend Cheese Singles, they are weeks old. I’ve heard people say they don’t like cheese curds, but the only ones they ever tried were the ones from the supermaket. It’s not even cheese by then.
What in the world is a cheese curd?"
A cheese curd is an orangish cheese byproduct that feels like Silly Putty but tastes a lot better. It was invented accidentally by UW cheese scientists attempting to create an object of pure cholesterol that would still squeak. Rats who are fed this remarkable food develop an unusual capacity to polka and drink beer.
Cheese curds, booyah and beer,
That’s what I like to hear.
I may be kinda pokey,
But I say “okey-dokey!”
To cheese curds, booyah and beer.

Where can I get a cheese curd?
Scroll to bottom for direct link. Renard’s ships anywhere domestically. I have used them for many cheese shipments, but I usually stay away from curds unless I send them overnight.
Oh.
So I guess I’ll be waiting until the State Fair. Or, maybe Taste of MN.
I am disappointed.
I know that Woodmans in Madison gets fresh curd that still squeaks, so it’s that days product. They keep it on a table by the cheese unrefrigerated.
I don’t find San Pablo MN. on a map, so I don’t know where you’re at. There are cheese makers near the MN & WI border. There must also be cheese makers in MN that you could look for with google that may be closer to you.
Er…it’s Saint Paul…in Spanish.
I thought it was obvious…I may end up having to change it again.
Will search for a cheese maker .
I didn’t have any trouble finding San Pablo. It’s right next to Inver Arboleda Heights.
Oh and yeah, because of this thread I am going to the bar to order fried cheese curds and beer. Thanks for determining my Saturday night entertainment.
As a resident of Highlando Parko, I knew right away where San Pablo was.
It’s not obvious unless you speak spainish. At least it’s a profile change and you don’t have to bug the moderators.
Wisconsin sites nearest to you I’ve stopped at:
There’s a realy good place in Spring Valley, by Crystal Cave (Cady Cheese Factory). Make a day trip to Crystal Cave and stop to get the cheese.
Another is north of Hudson (Bass Lake Cheese Factory).
Nope, not me. My real name has no relation to my SDMB handle (except the odd common letter, of course).
that sucks
I checked out these two websites for cheese curds, Carr Valley Cheese and Renard’s now I have a big dilemma they both sound and look so good and I know not all cheese curds are the same which one should I order from?
I’m biased towards Renards, as they are the only cheese factory in my neighborhood, but why don’t you order from both at once and compare? Invite your friends for a cheese party and tell them to bring beer.
And I also recommend Renard’s 2 year old, undyed (white) cheddar. Ask 'em to slice a 1 or 2 pound chunk straight from the wheel before they ship – they will shrinkwrap it and it always seems to taste better than pre-wrapped diary case stuff. Of course, with 1 or 2 lbs, you’ll have to invite some more friends. And more beer. {sigh} It never ends!
Carr Valley. I don’t care, just giving you a nudge off the fence.
Go to www.cheesers.com they get in fresh curd on Thursday from several different cheese factories in the heart of cheese country (Green County, WI). I have shipped curd with them several times and everyone who receives the curds say they still are squeeky when they get them.
What does undyed (white) cheddar taste like anything like cheese curds? Sounds kinda old to eat. Hmmm 2 years old I don’t know
