I knew it was going to be a trainwreck when Netflix took a dark satire about late stage capitalism in which desperate people throw their lives away to entertain the wealthy elite and decided to turn it into a real game show, but I didn’t expect it to be Fyre Festival bad.
Short version: Contestants were underfed and neglected, forced to stand still in freezing temperatures for so long that several required medical attention, and upon talking amongst themselves (which was itself against the rules) discovered that many of them had been given dummy microphones, some people had been eliminated despite succeeding in the challenge, others who failed were allowed to advance, and that Netflix had booked flights home for some of them before the first round even took place.
It sounds like Netflix certainly didn’t get the point of its own show, and I certainly won’t be watching this incarnation.
