Squiggly letter w thingy

What is the name of the squiggly “w” letter used to describe the nth complex roots of unity? And what’s its Tex command?

And why don’t math books provide an appendix of weird letters and what their names are?

I think it’s the lower case Greek letter Omega.

Lower case omega (\omega in LaTeX), maybe?

Do you recognize it in this list?

EDIT: Lower case omega is what they used in this Wikipedia article.

Omega is it, thanks. I was only familiar with the horseshoe omega before.

You can play around with LaTeX at MathBin; go there and see if you can’t come up with something like what you want using their reference card.

If you TeX the World, you can inline TeX into your posts like this: [; \omega ;]

One of the most useful websites I’ve found in the last year is DeTeXify, which does TeX/LaTeX character recognition from a hand-drawn squiggle.
