St. Patricks Day in Vegas

I gotta tell you, even after living here for almost 7 years, I am still in awe over what I witnessed last night.

There were free concerts at a few places, and I wanted to go hear some music. Silly me, I didn’t even think of what I was getting into.

Never have I seen so many totally wasted people actually walking around. They were freakin’ everywhere! Holding their mile high souvenir cups filled with vile concoctions, slurring their words, stumbling around in some effort to find more alcohol. And for me, seeing all these 20 somethings killing brain cells at an alarming rate made me REALLY not want to drive.

As I was getting on one elevator, a young woman was holding up her very drunk friend, saying such supportive things as, “You’re not gonna throw up, are you?” “If you’re gonna throw up, do it here were I don’t have to clean it up.” And my favorite, “Can you drive?”

 CAN YOU DRIVE? Holy Cr@p! She can barely stand up!

This was everywhere, I swear. In the streets, in the casinos, in the damn parking lot! When I went to get a non-alcoholic drink (because seeing all these people just made me a teetotaler, at least for the night,) the poor woman at the counter had been taking abuse all night. She was so happy to see a sober person, she gave me a free snack as a “Thank you for not barfing/yelling/drooling on me.”

I couldn’t even enjoy the music. There were so many loud obnoxious drunks yelling at their friends, total strangers, the band… I just people watched long enough to get a pretty good idea for a few public service annoncments and fled into the night.

Whew! How was your St. Patricks Day?

I have to admit I saw quite a bit of the same here in Las Vegas. The only difference was that I saw it way earlier in the evening - late afternoon to be exact.

I think a lot has to do with the NCAA March Madness event going on as well, so people who need an excuse to drink in excess had St. Pat’s Day, or the fact that their team won, or the fact that their team lost - any number of excuses to order another round.

Now I can add another holiday where I no longer need to go out, or drive, or do anything but stay home in Las Vegas. I will put this down with New Year’s, NBA All Star weekend and any of the major holidays that happen to land on a weekend.

I suppose it might be fun if I had a fresh, 20 year old liver to abuse and a group of friends who have never heard the words, “that’s enough, thanks.”

However; been there, done that - no need or desire to re-live the experience.
