St. Pierre and Miquelon

What is the deal with the two islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. They are just off the coast of Canada (Newfoundland to be exact), and are thousands of miles away from Europe, but they are considered part of France. Why? What would the French Government’s response be if Canada was to annex the islands by force? Just curious.

St-Pierre et Miquelon belongs to France because it got to keep those islands after loosing the war to Britain in 1760. The British invaded St-P and M in retaliation for France’s support of the American revolution. The islands were handed back to France in 1816.

The 7000 or so people who live there consider themselves French and, well, they are. Economically the islands are important as a fishing base.

If Canada were to invade it should expect serious repercussions as I’m sure it would break a slew of treaties and whatnot.
