It was not long after the war that the Maquis were not very well respected. Maurice Buckmaster wrote in 1952 :

Part of this may have been the idea that some of the members were identifiably communist supporters. Yet it’s been a long time since then. I feel that the Maquis today do get the respect they deserve, or was the original contention that some feel differently even now?
