Woodchucks. You’ve got woodchucks - aka ground hog, aka whistlepig, aka ground squirrel, aka marmot (and I’m just getting started); possibly the only creature with more names than Satan himself.
They are much bigger than gophers. I doubt you would even have noticed a bitty little gopher.
as I have posted previously, I had a dead raccoon right on the property line of my house and the house next door. It was however right by my driveway and was freaking huge. It was on the strip between the sidewalk and the street, which when I called animal control is the responsibility of the city to remove. if it had been in the actual yard it would have cost me $150.00 to remove.
I was quite worried some roving dog would drag it onto my drive way and leave it which would have been quite nasty. Fortunately, they came and got it pretty quickly.
Right, so we have established gophers and woodchucks are different. Good job.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch…
The smell has lessened. The raccoon has opened. It is still raccoon-shaped, only with a crack down the side. Thankfully, the smell has dispersed at least to the point where it no longer smells in my house.
Meanwhile, the link to vote it as a ‘problem’ is still here: https://seeclickfix.com/rensselaer-county . Local response crews tend to focus on issues voted as most problematic. Please up vote. This thing is also right at a local schoolbus stop, although that is only an issue for 2 more days.
Raccoon status: formless mass of hair, bone, and innards, mostly hidden by grass overgrowth from median. No longer smells in my house, which what I cared about primarily. Grass folks will come in the next week or two. Raccoon mash surprise!
