Star Citizen. Anybody playing?

It’s a crowd-funded game being created by Chris Roberts, the man who gave us Wing Commander and Freelancer. It will be a PC-based space sim, and eventually will have ship-to-ship combat, interstallar commerce, a FPS option, multiplayer, PVP, all that good stuff.

Right now it seems to be a little lean, as they’re mostly in alpha and only opened the beta testing for the ship-to-ship combat a couple weeks ago.

That link’s not working for me from work, probably because it’s a gaming site, so it should probably work for people outside the firewall.

One bump for the day shift…

I kickstarted it, but due to a combination of having little free time, and wanting to wait till the game has more polish, I haven’t jumped in yet. How is it?

All I’ve been able to do (and I may be missing something) is beta-test the space combat sim, which mostly involves gyrating wildly through an asteroid field while getting my ass shot off by a bunch of marauders. They’re imposing certain levels of real-world mechanics, so the faster you’re going, the slower you turn, although you can rotate on your axis and fire directly behind (think Viper combat in Battlestar Galactica). So, I’m either zipping past my opponents like a bat out of hell and unable to track them when they turn, or I’m going slowly enough that I’m wildly oversteering everything. Might still be some tweaks that need to be applied. Somebody here at work has directed me to the forums which have discussions on how to tone things down, a process which (currently) requires downloading an XML file to the config directory and using a console command to modify how sensitive the joystick response is.

You might also care to look at Elite: Dangerous, which is much more focussed and has much less funding.

I haven’t joined either but am keeping tabs on both.

I would like to play this game but will probably have to get a new computer
