Star Trek Prodigy

I waited until the season was over to binge it. It clearly has elements aimed at kids, and some of the Hologram Janeway stuff was pretty rough around the edges, but overall I liked it. It was good enough to place it in the top three made in the last couple of decades (along with but behind Star Trek Lower Decks and Star Trek The Orville).

It had a few callbacks (but not nearly as many as Lower Decks).

Now that both seasons of Prodigy are on Netflix maybe more people will be able and willing to give it a try. (At 20 episodes a season it is more like four seasons at current Trek release schedules.)

I’m five episodes into season two now. (The winning line from the episode so far? “I haven’t seen a crew this disfunctional since the Cerritos!”.)

I will avoid spoilers but I personally thought season 2 was fantastic. Great stuff from all the characters, some fun new characters and a plot that had me watch all 20 episodes in a single day. Plenty of easter eggs for previous Treks (even a callback to the Short Trek “The Trouble with Edward”!) but they weren’t obnoxious like Trek fanservice can be sometimes. My only criticism is that the plot does borrow heavily from the Coda novels which I hated. But the show avoided the pitfalls of those novels so all in all I don’t mind.

I’m up to 11 episodes now and actually enjoyed seeing Shuddup Wesley.

So far it is better written than season one. Practically Lower Decks quality.

Just finished ep 11 myself. Enjoying it. And the quick aside reference to Lower Decks was fun too!

One of the things that works here is that a new viewer, like the younger viewers who are the prime target, don’t need to have any previous knowledge of the ST universe to appreciate this show, and the in the know bits are not ham fisted.

I wouldn’t say this is peak Star Trek, like say Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are, in their own ways, but a lot better than Discovery, even with a similar number of hugs!

All these shows keep referencing the Temporal Wars. Think we will ever have a show placed “during” them?

Doesn’t Enterprise count?

If it did I think I must have stopped watching by then. I only remember one bit of seeing more than future attempts to influence their past.

You finished yet @Darren_Garrison?

I did earlier today.

It stayed fun enough but I think it really excels as an entry point to the Trek universe. Lots of references that I think would be less off putting than giving an introductory overview that will register if they start watching other Trek shows.

Yep, finished yesterday. Interesting that they overlapped it with Picard season one. It works as a decent series finale but leaves room for more stories if by chance any more episodes ever get made.

Also, having Wesley Crusher save the universe on paper sounds as bad as making the Pakleds main opponents in Lower Decks sounds bad, but they both worked

And off screen introduces an S3 character. :slightly_smiling_face:

Prodigy is placed a few years after Lower Decks (and I smiled at The Doctor’s reference to similar type of crew dysfunction). I’m dreaming of a Prodigy S3 that has them meeting up with some of the slightly older Lower Decks crew. The show ran its course but those characters are hard to say goodbye to.
