Star Trek TMP: Special Edition DVD

So, I basically doubled my nerd factor last night by running out and getting the new special edition DVD of Star Trek: the Motion Picture.

Verdict? I liked it. They cleaned it up, fixed a few things with it (other than the pacing) and released something very faithful to what the movie should have been, IMO.

That’s beside the point, though.

What I was curious was, if any of you Trekkies out there know what became of the V’ger/Decker union? I haven’t followed the TV series after that point very closely and am kinda curious if it ever made another appearance.

No idea - I don’t think it was ever explored further - although I PERSONALLY believe that they went back in time and formed the Borg… but that’s just me…

Easy! He got as far away from the Enterprise crew as possible. Watch the movie again and see how many of Decker’s suggestions and ideas are shot down. The only person lower than him is the tool ensign with the huge forehead. Decker/V’ger said screw this and stayed away for a century only to come back ad William Riker.

Damn! I had that thought this morning while watching some of the special features.

It sort of went like this:
Wonder whatever happened to Ilia?
Bald chicks in general don’t do to well on Trek.
Only other one I can think of is the Borg Queen.
Ha! Remember silly old story that the “machine planet” V’Ger visited was the Borg homeworld?
Hey … I wonder if …

Nah

So, is the DVD worth it? I’ve been an off again on again Trekkie for at least 15 years now, and I still haven’t stayed awake for one full viewing of The Motion Picture. I mean sure, if it’s not much better, I’ll have an instant cure for insomnia, but I was hoping for more. Much more.

I’d say it’s worth it, lolagranola. It’s less than US$25 at Best Buy, and for that you get a very nice version of the movie with some very well-done new shots (hell, the cleaned-up scenes on Vulcan are worth the cost of the thing). But on top of that, you get a 2nd disc with 4 behind-the-scenes specials, all the cut scenes from the 1979 theatrical and 1983 TV releases (which is when you really realize how much better the 2001 version is!).

Money well spent as far as I’m concerned.

Though I will admit, yes, I once again dozed off for a few seconds during the V’Ger fly-over scenes.

Absolutely. They did a pretty nice job with the dvd. Sound is pretty good. Image quality is as good as it gets. The new footage works well.* The special features are nice. If you like 70’s scifi, it’s worth it. I still dozed off at the end (for the record, that long stretch while they’re in V’ger’s airlock put me under).

Not sure if the Borg theory makes sense. I can’t picture the Borg fixing up an old machine and sending it off home.

  • The special effects crew avoided the main problem I had with the Star Wars Special Edition. In the SWSE, you’d be watching the same old movie and then suddenly … BAM!!! … CGI dinosaurs and a gratuitous flyover of a city … then back to the old movie. The crew in STMP made an effort to make the new footage look like the old, only done right. Nice.
