"Star TreK" trivia contest

I’ve misunderstood the term before with regards Trek. Something to do with being Science Officer and 1st Officer?

The name of his nemesis from academy days is on the tip of my tongue, I saw it too in a comic book of Kirk’s days in the academy. The joker leaves a bag of something nasty burning outside Kirk’s quaters.

Spock was, indeed, First Officer and Science Officer. Those are posts, or assignments. But he held two ranks (as signified by the braid on his sleeves) during the three seasons of TOS. That’s what I’m driving at. (And yes, Alan Smithee, I had forgotten your earlier question. This is a little different, IIRC).

IIRC, he was sometimes called ‘Commander’ and sometimes ‘Lt. Commander’ in season 1. By season 2 he was firmly established as commander.

That’s it!

It’s also about 1/4 of the way to answering my question…

  1. When was a major ST character shown sitting on the lavatory?

The Final Frontier, Kirk sits on one in the brig to think things over (best place in the universe to do your thinking.)

It was marked not to be used in space dock, funny touch but makes you wonder, are there little brown streaks where someone uses the loo at warp speed down the side of the Enterprise? :dubious:

Since no one’s answered them earlier:

  1. Amanda Rogers was the young Q whose parents were killed in a freak tornado.

  2. Finnegan was Kirk’s tormentor at Starfleet Academy; the good captain had fun beating the hell out of him in TOS “Shore Leave.”

  3. Ruth was Kirk’s sweetheart from years before, also seen just once, in “Shore Leave.”

Some new questions (unless it’s time to let this thread die with dignity?):

  1. When posing as an itinerant Vulcan trader in TOS “Errand of Mercy,” Spock says what two products are his stock in trade?

  2. Kor introduces himself as holding what new title on Organia?

  3. On what drug does McCoy OD in TOS “City on the Edge of Forever”?

  4. Starfleet’s first big (and disastrous) clash with the Borg was where?

  5. Sisko served on what Starfleet vessel in that battle?

Correctly renumbered.

239 1/2. Unless it’s time to let this thread die with dignity?
Probably, but that isn’t stopping me!

  1. On what drug does McCoy OD in TOS “City on the Edge of Forever”?
    Is it Tricordrazine?

  2. Starfleet’s first big (and disastrous) clash with the Borg was where?
    Wolf 357

Bear in mind my hearing’s dodgy, but IIRC it was something like Kivas and Trillium. Or have I just remembered characters from another show? :stuck_out_tongue:

239.5: Good for you - that’s the spirit!

  1. Close, but not quite. One syllable too many.

  2. So close! But one digit off.

Phonetically, you’ve got it: kevas and trillium (which was the name of a ST fanzine for several years, IIRC, although I never read it).

Wolf-359. A real star, not too far from Earth.

Correct! Check it out on Wikipedia. It’s been referred to a lot in science fiction - surprised me.

Simply Cordarzine? The girlfriend loves that episode for the frenetic performance from Kelley after his injection.

Hey, here’s a quick 244. What did two things did McCoy accuse everyone of being after his overdose in “City on the Edge of Forever”?

Well, you misspelled it a little, but you’re right to drop the “tri” prefix. It’s simply “Cordrazine.”

  1. “Murderers! Assassins!”

You’re right about his performance. Kelley chewed the scenery with great gusto; all the more effective because McCoy is usually such an even-keeled character. I actually found him a little scary when I was a kid.

My hearing really is that bad when it comes to TV :frowning:

Especially when he examines the skull of the man in the alley to see what time period he landed in

The sweaty, red-eyed look is also a bit scary when you’re a kid.

For Trekkers who’ve enjoyed this thread, I’ve also started one about Genevieve Bujold and her single day playing Capt. Janeway: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=8150495#post8150495

Since these are still unanswered, as yet:

  1. Kor introduces himself as holding what new title on Organia?
    Military governor.

  2. Sisko served on what Starfleet vessel in the Battle of Wolf 359?
USS Saratoga. His wife died, but he and his son escaped the destruction of the ship.
