Please excuse this casual Star Wars fan’s ignorance, but I was wondering…is there any explanation in any of the semi-canon sources (Like the novels, and whatnot) as to why no one went back to Tatooine to get Anakin’s mom after the whole Naboo crisis was over? Aside from the fact that it would have undone the entire story arc, that goes without saying.
I mean, Qui-Gon had even tried to gain Shmi’s freedom in Episode I (Not very hard, granted) It shouldn’t be too hard for a Jedi to sneak onto Tatooine without alerting the Hutts. And if the money was an object, I’d think that Amidala would be willing to lend Anakin the cash to buy his mother out of slavery, seeing as he helped save her planet.
So what say you, dopers? Can anyone shed some light on this issue for me?
I believe the official explaination is that Watto wasn’t willing to sell Shimi for any price, being his last slave and all. There’s even a data point out there that says the only reason Shimi was sold to Cleigg Lars at all was because Lars tricked Watto into the deal.
No, I only play a fanboy on teevee; I think Lucas makes it up as he goes along, myself.
Also, the Jedi have always been against having family ties because, as is shown in Episode II, it is easy to get too emotional about them. Therefore, the Jedi wouldn’t have let Anakin go anyway.
Well, IMO, Luke sort of rewrote the book on training Jedi. I mean, no way he would have been taken under the old system. Maybe the no-family-ties thing is one of the traditions the Jedi are blindly standing behind, to their own detriment. I get the impression that the Jedi and the Old Republic alike are stagnating until Anakin shows up.
Can anyone explain what exactly the Sandpeople were doing with Shmi? She was tied up and near death, so they must not have been taking very good care of her- was she a hostage being held for ransom? A slave? A Sandperson looove-slave?
She was probably being used as a sex slave. The fact that she was dying means either that Sandpeople men play rough, or they got some really nasty VDs.
They should have rated Episode II R, and had Anakin come upon a Sandpeople gang-bang of his mother. Better justify his killing of the whole tribe, and add a sorta interesting ‘primal scene’ psychological aspect to his becoming Vader.
