Okay, let’s get a few things out of the way. Han shot first, Sebastian Shaw is Vader, and there are no damn Gungans in the universe. Oh, and Carrie Fisher was still attractive, but that’s not really relevant to this post. So, now that you know the way I feel about Star Wars, let’s get down to it.
Frankly, are the single double-DVD releases from last year worth it? I can get all three movies for about $50 right now from Amazon. I don’t have a TV that would make the laserdisc transfer an issue (a 19" 4:3 TV) and probably won’t any time in the forseeable future. Or does it make more sense to wait for Lucas to get even greedier and release the super-ultra-mega boxset with all six films (and I don’t even want the first three or the so-called “special editions”) that includes properly-done transfers of the original releases and a ton of other bonuses? Now, I know there’s no evidence that such a thing is forthcoming, but this is Lucas we’re talking about here. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.
Well, Lucas is supposed to be releasing some uberdeluxe supercalafragalistic version some time in the near future, but the details of what it contains haven’t been released yet AFAIK. My advice? Buy the things off eBay, that way you’re saving a little money, and maybe if enough folks do it that way, Georgie boy will get a clue. (I know, I know, I know, but then again, 20 years ago if someone had come up to you and said that the prequels would suck ass, would you have believed them? Or even been able to comprehend the level of suckitude that they would obtain? Me either.)
I’d hold out until the unfucked OT comes out in Anamorphic. But then I did buy ESB in last years reissue and received RotJ as a gift and I am glad to have them, so…
The only one I’d really want would be ESB anyway. I mean, yeah, I’d like the whole trilogy, but ESB is the best movie and I think the least screwed-up by the whole “special edition” thing.
