I always thought at least that retcon made something make MORE sense in the original movie, Leia tells Luke isn’t he short for a storm trooper:dubious: Uh well Leia see people tend to be different heights you know.
But if all the ST are clones, makes sense she noticed something off.
Yes, otherwise, for the mini-light-sabers to have their desired blocking effect, the wielder’s own thumb and fingers would have to be in danger of being sliced off.
Perhaps it is a primitive lightsaber, which is why it gives off such an odd blade look. Also, those may be “ports” like exhaust or flame ports that are needed because the dude made his own primitive lightsaber.
And black doesn’t exist. The cool thing about scifi is everybody gets to be whatever, and people don’t notice unless the plot requires. “What is this, thing?”
I think John Boyega is supposed to be a good guy, so it’s probably the classic borrowed stormtrooper outfit.
Also, in the scene where the stormtroopers are on the troop convoy(?), the four or five that are visible have markedly different heights. No single-source clones, these.
I don’t think Stormtroopers were clones in the original trilogy. By then they were conscripted. They were part of the Imperial Academy that Biggs had joined and Luke was intending to enlist in. They’d be Troopers or TIE Pilots.
And in fact it may be that John Boyega’s character is an enlisted Trooper who goes AWOL.
Ohhhh … can we all sign a pact right now not to nit-pick this thing to death?
It will have many of the trappings of a Star Wars movie, but many things will also be different. It’s even possible that the tone and style will be significantly different, which doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
It will not be great. It will probably be good, if we give it a chance. It will not be whatever we’re expecting it to be, and it’s not going to be good if we aren’t ready to accept that.
In spite of Kevin Smith’s endorsement (based solely on stepping on a set piece for the Millennium Falcon), I do not expect this movie to hold the same magic the original films held for me when I was a 5 year old who hadn’t yet seen the original Star Wars films (not to mention The Matrix films, the Star Wars Prequels, the Lord of the Rings films, the Narnia films, the Harry Potter films, Avatar, the Hobbit films…seriously, just how many magical fantasy worlds do I have to get enthralled by?)
“Scotty! How many atmospheres of pressure is the ship designed for?!”
“She’s a spaceship cap’n! So between zero and one!”
I hope this movie has a lot of slow moments. Episode 4 was perhaps a pit too plodding at a lot of points (Tatooine especially), but I really admired how the first two movies stopped, took their time, and introspected in quite a few places. RotJ really didn’t, and the Prequels certainly tried at points, but that mostly led to poorly written romance dialogue when it happened.
Obviously it makes sense for them to highlight the actiony bits in an 80-second teaser, but I really hope they try and keep some of the mystique and quietness of 4 and 5.
JJ Abrams is excellent at pacing, so I think there will be quite a few slower spots. I imagine most of those moments would involve the original cast members, they aren’t likely to be doing much leaping around.
I for one am glad they’ve ditched the EU. With a few exceptions there is a lot of really shitty plots, books, and stories in there. I’ve never understood how the ‘EU’ gets so much of pass from serious fans of the universe, when so much of it is ten times worse than the prequels.
That being said, I like the look of the trailer overall. I wonder if it’s an age/experience thing, because initially picking up on small things like, an attempt to create a realistic feel to the ships, by having a contrail coming off the Falcon, but then my adult cynic steps in and wonders, how could there possibly be enough moisture in the atmosphere of Tatooine to create a contrail! :smack:
I’m determined not to nit pick, I’ll happily enjoy the ride, go to an early screening next year, and take the movie on it’s merits.
