Sounds like I need to get an X-Box now. I guess it was inevitable, since I’d probably end up with the X-Box when “Fable” comes out anyway.
Yes. The game is very different if played as a Darksider vs. a Lightsider. Also Dark Jedi force powers are different than Light Force powers. Dark powers are more necromancy-like. There are debuffs and dd spells. Light powers are more buff oriented. While you can learn a dark power as a light jedi (or vice versa) it will use up more of your force power and therefore isn’t as efficient. You move towards the light or dark side based on your actions. The choice of sex matters as well but I won’t say why. Either choice is good, just different.
So how long is it taking people to play and beat this game? I was seriously thinking about renting it the other night but I had a friend with me so we got a baseball game (MLB2K which sucks). If I rent it, I figure I have 5 days, and I would have to do it soon because I start school in mid August.
Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in: this is an outstanding game. It doesn’t even do anything revolutionary, but it’s so well put-together that it just all works, and it sucks you right in. I’ve put about 8 hours into it so far and I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface, and I definitely want to see what happens next.
I don’t know if it’d be worth buying an Xbox just for this one game, unless you were planning on getting one anyway. (JSRF, Mechassault, and, I guess, Buffy are the only exclusive games so far that I’ve thought were really good.) It’s very much a Bioware RPG and not a whole new type of game – think Baldur’s Gate 2 with a much more streamlined interface. And I’d be surprised if it’s not out for PC by Christmas.
My only real complaint so far is that the other characters all seem so much cooler than your main character. I’d rather be playing as the first guy you team up with, Carth, instead of doofy soul-patch guy. I’m playing this one as 100% light-side, and I already want to go back through the game and play as a dark-side character.
My favorite “touch” so far: when you make the utility droid your main character, if you go into first-person view, everything is shown at ground level with that video effect.
I’d say this definitely isn’t a rental, unless you’re planning on some serious cram sessions over those 5 days. Like I said, I’m 8 hours into it and feel like I’m just getting started. I’ve heard people describe being 30 hours into it and still being only halfway through. The latest Penny Arcade talks about the game a little bit, length-wise.
My Sith-wannabe Jedi has ‘maxed-out’ on Dark Side points, but I still cant attack the annoying little Yoda-critter on Dantooine.
Awesome game, and it seems to have good replay value. I am playing it through as a Soldier, as evil as can be (Dual Sabers, huzzah!). Next time, I will probably go the good-two-shoes route. Or Galaxies will not suck by then, and I can get that…
I’m probably going to wait on the PC version, painful though the wait will be. I wish a bunch of big name titles would get released at once because us freelancers often get the spillover. The only way I’d get my hands on a review copy of SW: KotOR is if Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Deus Ex 2, Thief 3 and at least three more titles were also released at the same time.
I’d also agree on the length. I didn’t get off of the first planet until about 8 hours in, mainly because i wanted to complete all the quests on that planet first. I can see this being pretty involved.
This might be a silly question, but is there any word on porting it to the PS2? I’ll get it for PC if I must, but would like to get it on a console if I can.
I just asked my editor and he said there’s no word on any PS2 conversion.
~40 game hours later, I have finished the game. I played as a Soldier, going as ‘Evil’ as possible. Most gratifying ending ever.
Major spoliers:
After a few somewhat comical/frustrating moments, such as not being able to hang out at the Sith Academy (Dammit! I am all about being a good little Sithy!), you finally out yourself as the evil bastard that you are. You are Revan, who was almost killed, saved by Bastilla (hence, the ‘link’ between you). The coolest thing is that a new conversation option pops up:
“Bow before me, the Dark Lord of the Sith!”
Basilla finally sees the light (harhar) and comes over to the dark side. When that happens, (and after you kill that one Jedi you get in the forest), you can order your Wookie to kill Mission. Eeeeeevvvvviiiiiillll!!!, as Manservant Hecubus would have said.
Stuff happens, than you kill Mavik (or whatever his name was). You become the Dark Lord of the Sith, with Basilla at your side. You get to see the Republic fleet smashed, etc. Lovely!
Next, a good Scout, methinks (unless I hear Galaxies is up to speed!)…
As someone mentioned earlier, the major story diversions are between light and dark side characters. The way the story is told also changes depending on which order you visit the main planets on.
The game also changes subtly depending on your chosen gender- I noticed, for example, that many of the male NPCs were more willing to talk to a pretty girl than they were to some random dude with a sword.
It took me approximately 46 hours to finish the game as an uber-light side character, and I probably left a good third of the side quests incomplete. Dark side characters will likely have a somewhat shorter game, as they can sometimes just kill everything in sight instead of jumping through hoops to make NPCs happy (this is especially true on the latter part of the game).
SolGrundy, how do you go into first-person view? I’ve beaten the game and yet somehow never figured out that that was possible…
Same here… in the game I just finished, I was literally as far into the light as it was possible to be. I think I’ll be playing this through at least twice more: once as a super-evil dark lord, and once as “myself”- i.e. making the moves that I would chose if I were actually in that situation.
You can’t attack NPCs that either (a) haven’t actively begun combat against you or (b) that you haven’t insulted enough to goad into a fight. It makes sense from a gameplay perspective: the game can hardly allow you to kill a character that will be crucial to the plot later on.
Nope. Console exclusivities aside, there’s no way a PS2 could run this game without severely degrading the graphics performance. The framerate chugs enough as it is on Xbox.
Push down on the right thumbstick to toggle first person view, and use the right thumbstick to look around. Any of the other controls will snap you out of first-person mode, i.e. you can’t move while in that view. It’s just for looking around at the scenery. Or for when you’re deciding on a piece of armor, you can switch to another character and then look at yourself up-close to see if it makes your butt look big.
So, help me convince my Hubby that the person with the sword in the TV commercial isn’t Ben Stiller. He’s convinced that it is.
I got it from BB with their Game Freedom Pass ($20 month, 1 game/day unlimited time)…
I played it for about a half hour; but found it too wordy for me. I prefer more action in my RPGs than talk, but maybe Ill try it again in the future. Also note, I have to read what they say so no voices for me.
