Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

So I just bought this X-Box game for my Nephew and my sister said he has not slept in 72 hours. Is it really that good?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic just looked really cool. And I like to buy my nephew cool stuff. My sis has not forgiven me for getting him an x-box but I guess I don’t understand what the deal is with this particular game.

Anyone played it? What do you think of it? How about the website? It doesn’t look that bad.

It’s pretty damn cool. I got my review copy yesterday along with all the cool swag.

It’s loads of fun. I called dibs on it two years ago at the LucasArts hospitality suite at E3 when the flacks showed me the demo.

Heck, my pub is even mentioned in the press kit!

It’s really that good. It’s nearly completely emmersive - you feel like you’re inside a Star Wars movie. There are tons of cut-scenes, and all the characters are voice-acted. It’s absolutely amazing.

And I don’t even have the game! (God, I needs me an X-Box.)

Yeah, one of the major selling points is the dialogue: every single line in the game has voice-over, even the bit characters that you only run into once. Before buying the game, I had expected this to be something of a cool gimmick, but it is as immersive as Bioware and Lucasarts claim, especially since the voice acting is some of the best I’ve ever heard in a video game.

Add to that a clever battle system that melds traditional turn-based decision-making with the visual flair of newer real-time action-RPGs, an excellent storyline that manages to be distinctly “Star Wars” in feel while making the universe its own, the chance to lean light or dark in your actions, and the best darn lightsaber fights outside of the films, and you get my favorite game of the year thus far.

Hmmm. Thats pretty cool. My nephew is 14 and is an avid gamer. I was advised by him to get an x-box last year… So for his birthday I got him one and me one. I rarely get to play it. I like the more combat games though. My favorite was Splinter Cell, and metal gear 2. Those are the only games I have. And when I play it’s usually late a night when no ones up but me and my dog… The boss hates it when I play when she’s awake… I suppose I’ll have to check out this game…especially if everyone gives it such high marks.

Phlosphr, the combat system is a bit different. Since it’s an rpg, it’s turn based. But since it’s Star Wars, its FAST. You queue up commands and tell each player what to do and to whom, but their skill is entirely dependant upon them, not you. You can pause it in the middle of a fight and change tactics, orders, etc.

For instance, the other day we were fighting the leader of a mandalorian terrorist group that had been ravaging the locals. They had quite a bit of firepower, and their leader was very apt at melee combat. If we went straight at the leader, we had to wade through 20 yards of blaster fire. If we held back and tossed grenades and fired blasters, we lost the advantage of having two jedi in the thick of things.

We ended up tossing concussion grenades into their group, which stunned all but the leader. The jedis rushed a minion each, and our sniper started taking out the remaining stunned. After the first kill, the jedis focused on the Mandalorian leader - who took out the main character. As the second jedi took him out, the sniper was in the middle of a firefight with another mandalorian - it was neck and neck. As the leader went down, the sniper levelled up, who learned the skill “Master Proficiency - Blaster”. It allowed him to power up the weapon even more, which immediately obliterated the target.

The only feature that it really lacks is a recording device, so that you can replay battles later.

I hate you guys, and I hate LucasArts.

(I am seriously considering buying an X-box in the next few days, just to play this game. Hell, consideration over. I’m doing it.)

nice! Munch you sold me again.

BEST. GAME. EVAH.

I just bought a psychotic protocol droid named HK-47. This bot is just insane, as I talk to it, it turns out most of his memory is gone, but he is programmed for assassination functions. He talks like the moviefone guy, too, all his sentences start with a description of the type of topic. He talks like a robot, but very often something kinda disturbing bubbles to the surface… When I check his light/dark allignment, he’s almost completely hitting the Dark end of the metre. This bot is E-VILLE.

“I have been told you have purchased me, shall I accompany you? I am most eager to kill something for you.”
I reply. “Kill something for me?”
“Answer: Indeed. I am most eager to engage in some unadulterated violence. At your command, of course, master.”

…He keeps calling me “meatbag” now. I ask him why, “Explanation: It’s just that… you have all these squishy parts, master. And all that water! How the constant squishing doesnt drive you mad, I have no idea…”

…I love this game.

Sooooo…when’s the PC version coming out?

Sorry, buddy. My media kit tells me that it won’t be soon.

Get thee to an X-Box!

Damn, I’ve been one of those die hard anti-console PC guys for a while now, but this might push me over to the dark side.

Forgive my ignorance (and the slight hijack), isn’t there some issue with different controller types when buying an xbox? Is it simply a matter of size or also of configuration?

Ign says that the pc version has a release date of October 15th. These things are very flexible (as in they get pushed back - never seen a game come out ahead of schedule!), so who knows.

I’ll just throw out the standard self-indulgent whine when this happens: “Yeah, well, they’ll take that extra time to work out all the crap that’s wrong with the console version! So there!” :stuck_out_tongue:

Thats not far from the truth actually, i hear there are game stopping bugs showing up already on the x-box version.

theendisnear, wait until you find out the REAL reason HK-47 calls all organic beings “meatbags.”

There are two “official” controllers: the original model and the Controller-S. The latter was designed in reaction to complaints about the original controller’s size, and is generally considered one of the better controllers of the current generation. I personally still prefer the original, massive controller (and I have tiny hands), partly because I got used to it before the Controller-S was released, and partly because I prefer the positioning of the start/back and black/white buttons on it over the layout on the Controller-S, but if you’re just getting an Xbox now, I’d recommend the Controller-S.

Good thing for you: new Xbox consoles only come with the Controller-S these days.

Unfortunately, you’re right- there’s a few points in the game where if you have your character set on stealth mode (read: cloaked) and hit the cutscene trigger, the game freezes and you have to start over. However, don’t let this dissuade you from buying the game! This isn’t as big a deal as it seems at first glance, as you have to specifically choose to use a character capable of stealth mode (only two out of nine), and have it activated at that moment.

Just check the latest news on the “Carth bug” over at Bioware.com’s forums and you should be able to avoid the glitch quite easily, even assuming that Bioware don’t just release a patch via Xbox Live.

Just got my copy and i must say… it rocks

I’m definately enjoying it. It’s by Bioware and you can tell. Imagine BG2 with third edition rules set in a Star Wars Universe and in third person. The story is alot better than other Bioware games - I’m guessing LucasArts wrote the story but I’m not sure. It is definately immersive. The combat works just like any other Bioware rpg except you can queue up feats, force powers (spells), etc. I loved planning tactics for battles in bioware rpgs and I find the third person makes it slightly more difficult (ie for judging distances) but the third person is better in every other respect. I’m not a big Star Wars fan but now I’m considering rewatching the first three episodes.

Will purchase tomorrow. Will not interact with living beings for a week. Game, Star Wars, game, Star Wars… ::drool::

It’s that cool. I don’t own an X-box, but my brother’s roommate does. I turned the game on to kill time one day, and ended up staying there all night playing it.

Since I don’t own the game, I have a question: Does the game play/storyline vary depending on the type of character chosen? That is, is there a different story arc for a male soldier than there might be for a female scout?

Let us know how EP3 is, the rest of us won’t see it for a few more years. :stuck_out_tongue:
