Yeah, Wedge Antilles was a minor character in IV and V (and possibly VI…don’t remember offhand). His importance was expanded immensely in the EU, becoming the commanding officer of Rogue Squadron and more of a second-tier character (except in the Rogue Squadron books) than a bit part as he was in the movies.
To me, Wedge was there to represent all of the Rebels who were not part of the Luke-Leia-Han clique - those quiet, hard-working men and women who did all the dirty work while the knights, princesses and rogues got all the glory. They were but warriors of the working day, but, by the mass, their hearts are in the trim.
Wasn’t Wedge also the only pilot to survive flying alongside Luke in all three movies?

He didn’t fly alongside Luke in RotJ, but otherwise, yes - we see him flying in both Death Star attacks, plus the evacuation of Hoth.
Yes, that was me being all meta.
Did you read the same Cracked.com article I did, or did you already know that?
Some blood connections between celebrities aren't so easy to spot, since they exist between people you'd probably never imagine being in the same room together, let alone getting drunk and having an argument on Thanksgiving.
The article answers Ethilrist’s question as well:
AK84:
Shaak Ti has been killed in deleted scenes how many times? Deleted scenes do nit count for canon, as opposed to showing that Lucas was BSing about “always sister bit”.
I am sure that if Obi Wan had asked Anakin, he would have said “sure why not”.
Except that it was reinserted into the movie in one of the multitudes of re-releases, thereby undeleting it.
