Star Wars Release Dates Question

According to IMDB, the new Star Wars movie is being release in the US on 12/14, the UK on 12/15 and much of the rest of the world on 12/16, 12/17 and 12/18, with the China release on 12/29. I assumed this staggered release strategy was because they wanted to have premiers with at least some principal actors attending, and you obviously couldn’t do that all on the same day, but I doubt they have splashy premiers in most of these countries so why do they delay the release dates worldwide?

I don’t know what release dates mean.

Your source says it comes out in the US on the 14th. But ticket sellers list the 18th as the release day. Yet even these sites actually sell tickets for the 17th as well!

I agree it’s a little confusing. Perhaps the LA Premier is on the 14th (a Monday), but general release isn’t until the 17th or 18th?

That link shows both the date for the premiere, where they have the red carpet and stars and everything, and the normal theater release date:

Also, most movies in the US are released into theaters on Friday, but somewhat recently theaters have started screenings on Thursday at around 7 PM. That’s why tickets are being sold for the 17th.

If there gonna be line ups around the mall, one would expect that Disney would want to monetize that with boutique viewing and accompaning pricing, with a general release date, 4 days later. Whats actually gonna happen, no idea, that would really depend on Disney keeping the master copy in Fort Knox, and finger printing any ,if any advanced copys.
