To make any comparisons fair, Lucas should do a little more digital editing to the first three movies. He should remove Chewbacca from the first three movies and digitally replace him with Jar Jar.
Don’t make me get the torches and pitchforks.
Uhm…check your timeline. The Battle of Yavin was several years before the New Republic was delared.
This geeky message brought to you by (not so) ExGeek.
:snort:
Just another thing to mention; going on stuff from the EU, the Rebels at the time often sent pilot trainees into actual missions, due to a lack of experienced fighter pilots. I don’t think they actually had a fully operational Y-Wing unit until after the New Republic was formed.
(Oh, and just to prove my geek credentials, I believe the one Y-Wing survivor of the first Death Star was Tycho Celchu.)
Hmmm.
I heard he was going to digitally alter Carrie Fisher in ANH and TESB so that she would always be wearing that bikini from RotJ.
Actually, that’s incorrect. Tycho was still in the Imperial Navy-a TIE pilot, in fact-at the time. It was his birthday and he was talking to his family via Holonet at the very moment Alderaan was destroyed. When the connection was cut off, he figured it was just a glitch and he could tease his father about it later, since his father was the head of a large holocom provider.
Only a little while later, he learned the truth, and even though the Empire blamed the Rebels, he didn’t think that made sense, since Alderaan was known to be sympathetic to the Rebellion. So he ditched the Imps and defected over to the Rebellion.
Maybe you’re thinking of Wes Janson?
As for digital improvements, I propose we allow George to go back and add the scene Ewan McGregor wanted:
I posted in another thread in CS about them so I’m coming here to vent.
I hate the goddamn Ewoks
Ewoks aren’t all bad, just have to marinate them properly and cook 'em fast over high heat.
You all knew that there’s a 30th anniversary box set coming out next year?
Lucas has been working feverishly digitally altering the original trilogy even further for this grand event.
If you feel that way, you need to read Aaron Allston’s X-Wing books. It’ll definitely change your mind. Ewoks RULE!
YUB YUB, Comannder!!!

Nope, I meant Tycho. I do know the talking-to-his-family story, but there is roughly enough time for him to find out the truth and defect between the Death Star destroying Alderaan and it then attacking the Rebel base, especially considering they were taking pretty much anyone in at that point.
Why i’m making the assumption is that i’m pretty sure an EU novel mentions he has the medal/patch for flying both Death Star missions (he definetly flew against the second, he was one of the pilots who actually went into the DSII). I’ll look it up again next time I have it to hand, though (if you’ve got it, it’s Rogue Squadron, and around the scene he’s flying simulations with the trainees).
Nice rear, Lieutenant.
Lieutenant, you’re out of uniform. And you know, wearing an Ewok as a swimsuit is a felony on some worlds.
No worries. Without a doubt, most of them were exterminated in the subsequent holocaust caused by the destruction of Death Star II.
And I think it’s probably against regulations to fly starfighters while performing a puppet show.
Just remember-you can’t look dignified when you’re having fun.
Actually, my experience playing X-Wing tends to support that theory. Y-Wing was a much better star fighter. I loved that the guns were placed so close together that I could be guaranteed a single-shot kill on a TIE with my guns set to dual-fire. The X-Wing’s gun placement was horrible in the games, especialy since the guns didn’t do the converging or tracking tricks that they did in the movies or books.
You’ll notice that in the Trench Run, the X-Wings fared about as well as the Y-Wings. Luke only did better because he changed up the strategy at the last minute (“OK, you guys hang way the fuck back there and just play at not getting your asses shot off. Also, drop a brick on the gas pedal and try not to hit a lamp post.”) and THEN had the fortuitous arrival of Han Solo (Having Harrison Ford on your side gives you +50 to winning in any situation.)
In X-Wing, the Y-wings were flying tanks. Great for recharge and firepower. Problem was getting into a melee with multiple enemy fighters. The speed and maneuverability wasn’t there. What you would get away with in an A-wing and most of the time in an X-wing would get your ass shot off in a Y-wing. When playing Tie-fighter, the Y-wings were always easy to kill. Cut speed, get behind them and shoot away.
I used to love destroying the Frigate in the early satellite mission. Totally unrealistic but fun to do.
Oh, oh, oh…I got another one:
Why didn’t Vader send in an aerial assault at Hoth? That’s the way to win, isn’t it? Send it the planes and bombers first, then move in with your heavy armor and foot soldiers.
Yes, I remember the Rebels switched on their force field but that was to prevent aerial bombardment from outer space.
To be fair, the Y-Wings were easy to shoot down in X-Wing too, but in missions where I could rely on some limited form of backup, they were very effective. The A-Wing, of course, was balanced in the other direction. It was fun to kill the sheilds and just do hit-and-run attacks in that thing.
