Yes, that one, which is why Han’s so surprised to see it, Kylo insists that it’s rightfully his, and Mas says that it’s Vader’s lightsaber.
Can someone confirm this? I feel I clearly recollect her saying it was Luke’s.
Same thing.
Those are very definitely different sentences with different meanings, esp when attributed as a quotation.
Luke’s lightsaber in ROTJ is green. This one is blue, the same as the one Anakin built and Luke later acquired.
There were so many nice little touches in this movie. Like how Rey was the first person in all of Star Wars history to treat a droid like a person instead of like property.
Yeah. The eyeglass lady somehow came into possession of it, only saying that it was a long story or something to that effect.
Only from a certain point of view.
But I think you’re right, she does say it’s Luke’s saber, not Vader’s. “Vader” never had a blue lightsaber. He didn’t take that name until after Obi Wan left him for dead on that volcano, at which point he used a red lightsaber exclusively.
I recall she said “Anakin Skywalker’s” first, and then later acknowledging it had been used by Luke. So it has to be the one Obi-Wan gave to Luke. One of the very first “leaks” were theories as to how this lightsaber made a return in this film.
Anyone want to theorize on Rey’s lineage? I think she has Skywalker blood one way or another. Her parents leaving her at a young age leave the door open for their identity. Watching the movie, I thought for sure she was going to be revealed as Han and Leia’s daughter, and was guessing Ren was a cloned Luke Skywalker (perhaps created from Luke’s missing hand) or perhaps half-brother conceived before ANH.
I find the Vader admiration a little misleading. If Luke was training a new generation of Jedis, he presumably would have made the point that Vader turned from the dark side. Presumably Leia would have known this as well.
Over all I liked the movie (I’d give it a 6 or 7) but my mind keeps circling back to all the parts that annoyed me.
You forgot “secret message hidden in said cute android”. This was a plot point that bothered me. Luke’s location is apparently a very important secret and some old, unknown dude has it? Weak. And he puts it on a memory stick apparently in the clear (BB-8 can read it). Does no one in the galaxy know about public key encryption?!?!
I have the same question. The tittering of the crowd in the theater made me think he was someone I should know.
I’m pretty sure I remember Maz mentioning Anakin. I thought it a weak point that Maz just happens to have Luke’s light saber (why doesn’t Luke have it?!?) and Han just happens to stop there with Rey and she just happens to find it. And of course this very expensive weapon is just sitting around in a wooden box not even locked up, just a few stairs away from a bunch of pirates and other ne’er-do-wells. Oy.
Like most I thought there was a bit too much reference to the earlier films (I did like the bar/cantina throwback, though). Fisher’s acting was poor, especially compared to her feistyness in the original trilogy. Poe’s character was a bit over-the-top for me (I liked the “space Fonz!” comment someone made earlier). The re-hashed death star plot was lame. I hope the next movie doesn’t get someone frozen in carbonite.
That said, Rey and Maz are great characters. I especially like how Finn goes to help Rey at the beginning and she doesn’t need it; Rey could be Elizabeth’s (from Pirates of the Caribbean) twin sister. Excellent scenery. Abrams had a few (welcome) unexpected moments like Kylo removing his mask.
I’ll die if in later movies Kylo Ren turns back to good.
Would we have to call him Ben Ren then? Or Ben Solo? (since when, and for how long?)
yikes.
I think Queen Amidala (or IS she?) qualifies in PHANTOM MENACE, declaring that the little droid deserves their gratitude and will be cleaned by her handmaiden.
(Seriously, what’s going on there? Did they work that out ahead of time, or can the decoy/bodyguard just decide on her own initiative to make Padmé scrub stuff?)
Favourite line:
“Is there a garbage chute? …a trash compactor?”

I really really enjoyed it. It isn’t a movie that will change the world and it plays like a remake of Star Wars but it was entertaining and well made. Some thoughts:
Adam Driver was surprisingly good as the villain. Knowing him mainly from Girls I was worried by that casting but he did it.
I knew the minute Han saw Kylo Ren on the bridge, Ren was going to kill him (his real name being Ben was a nice detail). This is the first movie in a trilogy. It would be too soon for the villain to be redeemed.
Han had a much bigger part than I expected. I assumed his part would be little more than a cameo like Leia.
I think the cuts back and forth at the end between Rey and Luke went one to many times. It started to feel like parody and I almost laughed.
I was very glad the main bad guy was just a hologram. for a second I was like, “He’s a giant? WTF”.
The two chess pieces reversing rolls from Star Wars was a cute reference.
Seemed weird to me that Ren was asking for spiritual assistance in being evil from the guy who turned from the Dark Side and tossed the emperor over a railing.
Not me. I thought “Eh, he’s going to get pushed over the edge then by some miracle he’ll be fine.” When that lightsaber went through him I lost my shit.
I guess “Ben” is named after Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi? <– or did I just state the glaringly obvious there.
No - he got the name Vader right after he helped kill whatever-Jackson’s-character’s-name-is. I don’t think he ever mentioned the new name to anybody in the prequels, though. Volcano-planet is where Obi-wan stole the blue saber, though.
He makes a big deal out of wanting to be stronger than Vader. I took that to mean he needs the strength to resist the Light that Vader lacked in the end.
I believe the line about the saber was something like, “It was Luke’s saber, and his father’s before that” Not Vader, not Anakin, just “his father”. But anyone who has obsessed about sci-fi hardware for 30 years would know that it was the one lost on Bespin, just by looking at it. (many of us noticed even in the trailer)
BTW, was anyone a little annoyed by all the “our son” this and “our son” that between Leia and Han, as though deliberately dancing around saying his name, just so it could be the big reveal later? A bit clunky.
(I will note that it does make more sense to name him after Ben than Anakin, as in the EU, but I was half-expecting they would throw a small bone to the Eu there and have it be Anakin. (just skipping over Jacen and Jaina, unless Rey is Jaina…) “Ben” was a nice surprise.)
I don’t think she ever explicitly used the name Anakin. As I recall it, she said a line very close to “first it was Luke’s father’s, then it was Luke’s, and now it calls to you.”
