Star Wars:TPM-DVD worth buying

Just wondering if this is worth buying. I am mainly waiting for the original trilogy to be released someday, but because of the Star Wars name I am considering getting TPM. I was not real impressed when I saw it once at the theater. So do the special features and extra scenes make it a worthwhile purchase?

TIA

My kids think it was worth the price. It’s got quite a few Easter Eggs.

My guess is that Lucas is going to wait and release all 6 in a special collector’s edition that does not include the original versions that we all saw in the theaters but will have the accursed enhanced or whatever they’re calling that butchering-Greedo-shot-first crap. I’ll keep my original video tapes.

Lucas doesn’t consider the original cuts of the movies the real versions so he will NOT be including them in on the future DVDs. It makes sense, his movies, his final cut. The OT DVDs will be released shortly after Epi 3. Atleast ANH will include new footage. ROTJ is rumored to get some new footage as well (rumor is Portman will be added as either a hologram or an epilogue showing her to actually still be alive)

You can buy buy Bootleg DVDs of the OT already…They are just the movies. People swear the quality is DVD quality but I find it hard to believe since, you know, the whole BOOTLEG thing.
As far as the TPM DVD, I think it is well worth it. I enjoy the extended Pod race (as a stand alone not in the movie). The added introductions of the pilots is neat. The Ratts Tyrell family is hilarious and tragic (he crashes and dies while his family watches)

By far the Tone Poems are my favorite.

I have it, I’ll sell it to you.

Just kidding.

There are some great making-of’s, but in all just go rent it. IMO I saw them once and I don’t think I’d watch them again.

I can tolerate all the original trilogy stupid additional scenes except for Han not shooting Greedo first. This was an essential character element.

Ditto. Even if it wasn’t character development it ruined a great scene. I actually quite like most of the enhancements. If someone could hack the dvd to re-alter that one stupid scene it would be a great bundle.

I like the DVD. I like the outtakes. If you have a spare $ then get it. Of course I also felt much better about the movie then most people did.

Contrary to Leia’s statements in ROTJ. I wonder what his explanation will be?

The DVDs of the original cut are gernerally taken from the laserdisks. I wouldn’t call them DVD quality, rather I’d put them smack in the middle of broadcast TV and DVD quality. The only real reason I can think of to get them on DVD is that they will likely be in the same condition 50 years from now as they are now. I fully believe that once Lucas dies the original cuts will be made available. I mean look at the money to be made. I saw ATOC available on DVD shortly after its release.

What makes the Greedo thing even worse is that Fett says on 2 seperate occaisions that Han is no good to him dead. So why would Greedo shoot him unless he cared not for the credits.

How is it contrary? It was pretty clear that she didn’t remember her mother very well. The whole “my mother died when I was very young” could have either been A: a foster mother, or B: a false story/memory that her guardians told her.

After all, Luke was told that his father was dead…

I bet she’ll get added as a ghost at the end. Not jarring, makes sense, and doesn’t change much. Plus it wouldn’t be hard to do. The only worry is that the actor that played the old redeemed Anakin get’s swapped out with Hayden Christensen. <shudder>

I think its worth buying, personally

Oh, and if they put in Hayden into ROTJ, won’t they also have to always change Alec into Ewan?

Heehee, sounds like there could be a huge debate over the matter.
Ahem Technically, it is contrary. Leia says she was dead. If it then turns out she was alive then Leia was wrong. Her statement would be contrary to the truth despite her beliefs. Of course I didn’t mean it that way.

Certainly she was not privy to the truth around her family and many things certainly could have been easily kept from her. But I always took her description of her mother as “sad” to show that she did indeed know her mother since she would naturally be very sad what with losing her husband, or at least lover, to the dark side, forced into hiding and losing her son.

Either way I would rather that Leia had known something of the truth about her mother. And until we know otherwise that’s what I’ll stick with. For now it’s just rumor. Plus Lucas has been known to change his mind about things.

Sigh:rolleyes: I guess Kucas is just determined to show the world that the coolness of the original movies was a fluke and that he really is a horrible director.

I read an article where Lucas said that making the OT on DVD would be difficult as they don’t have a lot of material for behind the scenes stuff. (I dunno baout that…I’ve seen plenty.)

But here is what I would like to see on the OT DVD’s:

The new updated version of the OT ofcourse, and…

The ORIGINAL thatrical releases of the movies!
Uneditied, (The word crawl in ANH would say “Star Wars” not “A New Hope”)
and Undubed, (Beru would speak in her lovely original English accent.)

Lucas could add these in saying that they are not official anymore, blah blah blah…but it would be nice to see all the things that were changed in the past 20 odd years.

If you have a surround sound system then TPM will really put it though it’s paces. Also you can skip to the light saber duel easily.

My four year old digs the DVD. I watch it more because of him. He has yet to show interest in “making of” extra features…

I think the extra features are worth the price of the DVD alone. There are almost 6 hours of extras, and the making of documentary is one of the best I’ve ever seen included on a DVD…it’s not cheesy, it actually follows the production as it’s happening, not “we did this, then this.” I found it very, very cool.

Thanks for the input. I think I will wait and buy it later. Hopefully there will be a nice package with all six together. I do not mind most of the additions other than Greedo shooting first. I have the original movies on video (pre-SE) but unfortunately they are not letterboxed and the tapes are showing there age. I do hope Lucas is finished messing around with them all or most of the additions while interesting are not really necessary.

By the way msmith537 I do happen to think that Lucas had a fluke with Star Wars. The movie he had the least to do with is widely considered the best (ESB). And other than the Star Wars movies, he has not done anything near that level. I personally wish he would just outline a basic story, let someone else write and direct it and spend his time working on the special effects.
