I seem to remember some reference being made to special training or conditioning provided to Starfleet officers like Kirk, which made torture less - or not at all - effective. Is that right? Is it canon? In what episodes or books was it discussed or developed as a concept?
Come to think of it, by the time Picard was captured and tortured by the Cardassians, I don’t recall any reference to it at all. Hmmmm.
They mention something about that in the Roman Empire episode. Something about how Kirk won’t have his crew beam down, because he’s made of better stuff than the freighter captain.
I don’t remember anything being mentioned in any of the TOS episodes but in the TNG episode “Coming of Age”, there is a subplot about Wesley having to take a psych exam on the holodeck that will “face him with his greatest fear” as part of the Starfleet Entrance Exam.
And in “Thine Own Self” Troi has to send a holographic Geordi to his death to prove she can make the hard decisions and be a full Commander as part of a Bridge Officer Exam
