So I’m searching through TUBI(my source for the B-Side of entertainment) and came across a British science fiction series from 2004 called Starhyke, starring Claudia Christian. It is like a cross between RedDwarf and an SNL sketch put together at the last minute. With character names like “Captain Belinda Blowhard”, “Sally Popyatopov” and “Ensign Bull Ox”, and scripts that appear to have been written by the people behind the last season of Mork & Mindy, my first impression is that this show was created to be a tax loss for the studio.
Has anyone else seen this idiocy?
^^I love TUBI, and the b-side of entertainment is exactly what it is!!
I will look for Starhyke. Sounds campy and fun!!
I started watching the first episode. The concept is certainly a good one for comedy, but the overacting keeps anything from actually being funny. It is far too broad, and the directing hits everything with a hammer; it’s one step away from putting up a big sign flashing “THIS IS FUNNY!!!”
About the only humor is in the references to other TV shows and movies.
I might watch episode two – often the pilot of a show doesn’t really find its footing – but I’m not hopeful.
I gave up halfway through episode 2. It made “Are You Being Served?” an epitome of sophisticated comedy by comparison.
Claudia Christian, who showed a great wry sense of humor in Babylon 5, just hams it up to no good effect.
Being in the UK, I was slightly curious that the name rang no bells. Turns out there’s a reason. The Wiki page tells the strange story of a straight-to-video sitcom (takes some doing) which, years later, turned up on satellite TV channel that I had never even heard of.
