I was absolutely incensed and up in arms when I read about the proposed amendment to the Constitution, and discovered that several people at my school shared my opinion. We deicided that we wanted to start a protest to try and get something done about this. The problem is, we have no idea how to go about it. If you have any information, or know of a group in the Phoenix (AZ)
area that is already planning a protest, please let me know. This is very important to us.
“Never doubt that a small group of committed individuals working together can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that can.”
At its most basic, a protest requires only a time, a place and people. “Show up tomorrow at the courthouse to protest the proposed amendment.” To maximize the effectiveness you want as many people as possible, media coverage and some uniformity of purpose. Each of your upset friends can start by calling all of their friends, having those who are interested call their friends and so on. Keep a list of who’s interested so that you can let them know about future events. This list is called a “phone tree.” You will probably want to have at least one get-together beforehand to make signs, decide if you want one or more speakers, etc. and to put together a brief press release to send to the local media outlets.
I have no idea what kind of permit regulations apply in your area so contacting the ACLU for that sort of information is a good idea.
If you can’t get people together for a rally-type protest then you could do something like make buttons and wear them, passing them out to people who ask for them.
