I’ve searched the Microsoft site and not finding anything that matches what happened just now. I started up my PC and got a verbal message repeating itself on the computer’s speakers, saying something like “your license is expired, update or PC will restart every few minutes.”
Message stopped when I clicked my name to sign in.
Win10Pro, everything’s up to date. Running a full scan right now.
I’d Google the exact phrase.
How awful. Almost definitely some type of malware.
Is it possible for you to take a video (with the audio of course) and post it somewhere (youtube?)?
Also, shouldn’t this be in GQ?
What is “your license”? License of what? Sounds like one of those spammy messages where they use the generic “your product” instead of identifying it by name.
If Windows is not genuine (legitimately or false positive), all they do is turn your background black, add a popup on startup, and write a message in the lower right.
All signs point to malware. Yes google the exact phrase (in quotes) to identify the type of malware and how to fix.
Full scan is still running but it appears to have detected a problem. Hoping I can sort it out once the scan is completed. It’s a work computer, it’s also the one with the document scanner we’re using right now for faxing - a temporary workaround while in the process of moving and the main server is already moved to the new building (I’m in the old one). We have a sort-of IT guy but if he has to show up on-site there’s a charge. If the fix doesn’t seem easy or doable by me (I’m admin on this PC), I’ll screen shot stuff and send it to him.
This is co-workers noodling around on questionable stuff during lunch, I’m sure. I need to firewall the guest login.
Thanks for all your input, I thought the voice through the speakers was not right.
