State of Florida vs. George Zimmerman Trial Thread

If there was not the outcry by people falsely calling this a racist murder, there would be no murder charge, and no defence to pay for.

Done for today. They will be working through the weekend. Lots of overtime for the cops and court workers.

You mean…If there was no outcry on behalf of this boy murdered for racist reasons, there wouldnt be a defense to pay for.

CNN Headline News: Might be a “Meatloaf ‘Sleep on It’” verdict. I’ll give you an answer in the morning…

No, I did not mean that. There was no boy, no murder, and no racist reasons. Had there been, I would have mentioned them.

I said earlier that I have been into this for the debate, which I have found remarkable. And you, Magiver, have been the most remarkable of all. Which is fitting since your post count exceeds everyone elses’s by many hundreds.

O’Mara raised several great points in closing.

He shot down the wanna be cop argument by pointing out that Zimmerman turned down the offer to join the civilian patrol. Which included a uniform, car, and other cop like things.

His 4 mins of silence drove home the point that Trayvon had plenty of time to go home. He left it to the jury to imagine what Trayvon actually did (most people think he circled around to confront Z).

Now its up to the jury. They just left for today without a verdict and will come back Sat at 9AM.

You mean....tm was a girl? If he wasnt a girl, the only alternative left is, boy. I know you want to paint him as a man, but that is simply not the case, he had just turned 17, and was in the middle of his high school career. As much as it doesn't have a good look for your boy, you cannot change the facts except in your own mind...and don't even go there as far as there being no racially motivated cause. It was a hate crime based on fatboy had a hard on to get tm, he didnt have to use his gun, he wanted to. He couldn't wait to use it.

In many states, you go to big-boy jail if you’re 17 years old. While a 17-year-old probably lacks the emotional maturity of 29-year-old, there’s no sense in treating a 17-year-old like a child.

I’m curious about what Tray’s reaction would be to being called “boy.”

My opinion is that if Trayvon had been sentenced and put in jail, instead of a diversion program, he would be alive today.

I described tm " A boy…" that is a world apart from addressing him as ‘boy’…but I guess you will twist anything around. Instead of acknowleding he was a boy, you make cracks that are not related. What do parents of a male child say? i have a male child or a little person with xy genetics?

Good try…in this case, this particular boy was the victim ,not the perp…therefore tm was not going to jail, the only inmate here has been gz…its clear that gz supporters will do anything to distort the facts to fit their cause. The facts are that tm was a minor, he was barely out of tenth grade when he was murdered. I didnt say he was a little bitty boy, thats irrelevant, he was a child under the law.

Except that they are psychologically are treated as such…something about maturity and brain development.

“I have a teenage son”. No 17 year old male wants to be called a boy, and I’d guess especially not a black one, given the history there.

The facts are Martin assaulted Zimmerman, Zimmerman is the victim, and is also the victim of a politically motivated show trial, that fortunately has not gone the way people like you hoped. Martin is a victim of nothing other than his own stupidity and violent behaviour.

The legal age of criminal responsibility in all of the US is, at most, 12 years old. At that age, you are expected to understand what is legal and what is not.

Martin knew what he did was illegal, or at least should have done. He wasn’t required to judge whether it was right or wrong, the reason we have laws is so we don’t have to trust that strangers are mature, moral people.

The argument about his maturity might be relevant if we were expecting him to judge whether something was moral. We aren’t. He was expected to obey the law, and instead he attacked Zimmerman. He was expected to know better.

It’s tragic that he’s dead, but it’s no-one’s responsibility but his own.

We’ve been over this, including a discussion of the development of the prefrontal cortex and executive reasoning, in either this thread or the trial thread.

Bottom line: at 17, you’re old enough and responsible enough to know right from wrong. Adult enough to operate a motor vehicle. Adult enough to consent to sexual relations. Adult enough to early-enlist in the military. Adult enough to decide to drop out of school.

I know it helps the presentation to refer to TM as a “child” (which is why the State kept referring to him that way in closing arguments.) And that’s why all the pictures show the sweet, innocent kid instead of the tattooed one throwing double birds or exhaling smoke…of some type. And if we’re going to go that direction, again, then I have to ask what this child was doing running around unsupervised. His parents–the ones prominently in the courtroom–weren’t around at all. So the failure to properly supervise a “minor child” falls on whom, exactly?

No one disputes that a 17 year old should be able to differentiate right from wrong, it’s the fact the onerous was on Zimmerman was to diffuse the situation; because Zimmerman - not Trayvon - was the one who was both biologically and legally “mature”. Zimmerman’s biggest mistake wasn’t getting out of his car, it was the fact he didn’t even introduce himself to the person he was following. Why wouldn’t you tell the person “Hey, there’s been robberies in the area” and “I’m from the Neighborhood Watch”. That would undoubtedly diffuse most situations that could arise, though it’s possible it may not had made a difference here (but I suspect it would’ve).

I also encourage to ask any 27 year old: have you been in a fist-fight with a minor? I imagine there will be >95-99% negative. As I stated before, I just can’t see adults - real, emotionally mature adults - getting into scuffles with teenagers. Have you? Has anyone else here been in a fight with a minor? Do you have family members that have?

  • Honesty

Like how it helps gzs case not to show pics of him beating on or threatening his ex, or that real unflattering one of hin assaulting a police officer

Defuse.

Did Zimmerman know that Martin was 17? Did Martin know that Zimmerman was 28? The convenience store tapes from that night, when Martin bought his drink and Skittles show that he was a tall guy. Was he the 6’3" that the family originally said, or the 5’11" that good old Dr. Bao measured–we’ll not know. But in the dark, with the hoodie on and up, do you really expect Zimmerman to be able to reliably establish TM’s age?

I still think, as a CHL holder, his mistake was getting out of the truck. But I will stipulate that it could have been a different outcome if he’d identified himself, if he were given that opportunity.
