State Residents Are Called...?

Virginia: easy, Virginians
Florida: Floridians

Indiana: ?
Maine: ?
New Hampshire: ?

Merriam Webster gives both Indianans and Indianians; Mainer; and both New Hampshireman and New Hampshirite.

Mainiacs?

“Who…who are you?”

“I’m New Hampshireman!”

I found this.

Referencing the above link, If anyone ever refers to me as a “New Jerseyite,” I’ll hit them. The proper term is “New Jerseyan.”

Also, a “Maineiac” is a resident solely of Maine, i.e. one who was born in Maine and lived there for their entire life to date.

For Indiana, I’d use Hoosier. The word has been around well long enough to be an accepted part of formal speech and not merely slang. I suppose that in some sort of hyper-formal situation one might choose to say citizen/resident of the State of Indiana, but in any other context, Hoosier is the appropriate word.

Here’s where it gets tricky: Hawaii?

Merriam is dead wrong about that one. As a Hoosier myself, I can assure you we never call ourselves Indianans.

I’m from NH, so I’ll confirm that we are indeed New Hampshirites. However, I’ve never heard the term New Hampshireman.

I am not a North Carolinian…I’m a Tarheel and durn proud of it.

Yeah, “Hawaiian” doesn’t really work for haoles (or other non-blood-quantized Hawaiians). Having lived there for six years, I can say that residents call other residents locals. For the businesses, residents are kamaai’na (hope I got that diacritical mark right). When visiting the mainland, it was always – “I live in Hawaii”; the oohs and ahhs that followed were always enough that I never worried about what to call myself.

When I lived there, I’d never tell someone that I was Hawaiian – it seemed sorta disrespectful to me.

According to that link, I’m a Pennsylvanian, but I’ve never once been a singer in the troupe organized by the late Fred Waring.

I propose that we be collectively known as the Feebs, because the legislature in Harrisburg seems to view us as too feeble minded to effect our own decisions without another law to oversee it. :dubious:

I suppose now it should be New Hampshireperson.

Buckeyes.

And just don’t TOUCH the ‘Delawarian/Delawarite’ issue. That one’s tricky.

A fair amount of circumlocution (citizens of ___, ___ residents) is necessary unless you’re dying to call them Wyomingians. The same goes for cities where you get into even bigger trouble (or even more fun depending on your perspective).

Delahoovian is right out.

And what about the lovely ladies from Idaho? What would they be called? Hmmm?

A Mainer is one who stays in Maine to enjoy the beautiful spring, summer, and fall weather. A Maineiac is one who stays for the winter too.

Maineiac

May I propose “Delawarriors”?
