My wife earned a teacher’s pension in RI but moved to MA and continued working up here. The state of RI managed the pension fund and, oops, spent it. Everyone covered by the plan ended up getting their pensions reduced, essentially getting payouts cut in half. Even people already retired had their monthly payments reduced.
It was a shit show. Fortunately, she had enough years of work in MA that she’s fairly well set for retirement. Others weren’t so lucky and didn’t have much recourse.
