Statistical Analysis Consultants

I’ve posted a few times about how to do my statistical analysis for my survey results performed as part of my graduate thesis and have received a number of awesome responses that I researched, so thanks all for your help so far.

I am still at a loss and am looking at hiring a consultant or tutor to help. Have any of you done this and do you have any recommendations? I did contact one company and got a very quick response, but after googling I’m wary that it’s a scam, so doubt I’m respond. If anyone has any suggestions I’d appreciate it.

If your professors can’t help you, how are they supposed to evaluate what you’ve done? Or are you just saying they won’t help you?

I don’t believe any of my professors are statisticians, so even if they wanted to help, they probably wouldn’t be able to do much. I am going to try one more University prof and see if he can give me some help, but after that I’m at a dead end in that respect.

If you’re doing a Ph.D I see zero problems with you going to any professor on campus and asking for an hour of their time. If it’s for a Master’s they might be less invested in helping you, but I can’t imagine one would turn you down if you schedule it.

How small is your university that there are no Stats professors?

If I may. My wife is a statistician. I asked her if she has any advice. She said from her experience, universities almost always have some sort of center staffed by graduate assistants to help math students. She suggests checking the Math or Statistics Department (she says Statistics is not always under Math) and seeing if they can guide you towards someone. In fact, she’s a little baffled that your profs haven’t already suggested that.

Ok, just to clarify, this is a Masters program (not doctorate level) structured for people who work full time. So part of the problem is that my University is 1400 km’s away and I’m only there for three weeks once a year. Think professional MBA program style where you work full time, do distance courses, and have one or two residencies per year. It is not a regular University with typical ‘departments’, so no, there is not a math or stat’s department. This is an obvious downside these types of programs.

I did email the local University (University of Calgary) stats department and got no response. I’m sure the reason is because I’m not a student there.

So, I’m left hanging. Serves me right for deciding to use mixed methods in my research when I have zero background in it.

Thank you for the advice so far!

Find a university with a graduate program in statistics. Email the graduate coordinator for that program, tell them you’re looking for paid help in basic methods, and ask if they’d mind forwarding your request on to their students.

I see. My advice on that is if the U of Calgary Stats Dept did not answer your e-mail, then give them a call and talk to someone. Worth a shot.

Will do this.

Combined with this. Great advice, thank you!

I second this. Also, consider emailing the professors directly. One of them will probably be willing to talk with you or at least connect you with one of their doctoral students.

All right, I just went through all the professor profiles for the U of C Math and Stats department and any that listed stats as a topic of interest just received an email from me. I did say I’d pay, so hopefully that prevents them from trashing the email.

Thanks folks! I don’t know why I didn’t think of this on my own, tbh.
