Yeah. Part of me did find it a little obnoxious at first, but then I realized I’m getting worked up about the silliest event in professional sports. Hell, Cano himself probably found the whole thing hilarious.
Jeff Sullivan more or less sums up my final opinion on the matter. This whole kerfuffle is roughly as important as who started the Celebrity All-Star Softball Game, and significantly less important than who starts the All-Star Game itself (This Time, It Matters™). Which is still not saying much.
I actually like that the fans have done what they can to regulate this. Bud Selig doesn’t need to put yet another personal stamp on baseball.
You know, I wouldn’t be opposed to a home team HR Derby contestant even if he didn’t make the All Star team. The Derby is the second most meaningless spectacle in sports (nothing means less than the NBA dunk contest). Is there currently a rule that contestants must be All Stars?
Must have been a bit frustrating for KC fans to watch Melky hit that HR in the ASG. To think, for him they got perhaps the worst starting pitcher in baseball so far this season! If Melky (and Sanchez) keeps this up it might pass Jermaine Dye for Neifi Perez for worst Royals trade of the past 20 years (although, to be fair, Sanchez for Cabrera looked decent in foresight, Dye for Perez was idiotic at the time).
Cano has said he doesn’t mind the fans booing him but draws the line for the way they treated his family when they went to the rest rooms. If that is true, then there are some real classless fans in Kansas City (and unfortunately a lot of other places).
