Has anyone ever been caught for shoplifting something small, like a candybar or magazine?
I’ve always seen the signs that say, “All shoplifters will be prosecuted to the full extent if the law” and wondered what the “full extend of the law” is if you have a clean record and the item is small.
So, fess up and tell us all about it!!!
I shall start with a stupid, but somewhat related story:
I was once accused of shoplifting by a store-owner of the local privately owned grocery store. This was before I drove a car, so I had ridden my bike up to the store.
I was just getting back on the bike to leave when the owner came running around the corner yelling at me to stop. As I walked back into the store with him, he said, “You can either tell me about it or the police.”
I said, “I guess I’ll tell you.” I had no idea what he was talking about.
Some(IMHO) loser who worked in the back of the store claimed that he saw me take a magzine. It quickly became obvious I had no magazine or anything else on me. The owner was so determined that he ran out to see if I stashed it on my bike. Then he came back in and asked the “loser who worked there” where I put it.
The dude indicated that I shoved it down my pants, but this clearly wasn’t the case. The other customers in the store looked at me like I was guilty, but had somehow gotten away.
I have never been back to that store, but have always had secret grudge against it.
I’ve honestly never shoplifted anything in my life. It made me really mad, 'cause I think all the customers and the owner think I got away with something. :mad:
P.S. Did I just coin the phrase, “mods that be”? I thought of that when typing the intro to this thread. Just curious if I’m the first to use it.
