Steam (and other) black friday sales

For a $55 difference, that seems like more of a reason to pass on Skyrim and play Oblivion

Orcs must die is pretty great.

Honestly, just go for Skyrim. It’s amazing. Best game ever. Seriously.

Oblivion was good for its day, but hasn’t aged well. Morrowind was very good, and has somehow aged much better than Oblivion has (though the graphics look pretty rough by today’s standards). I would recommend Morrowind over Oblivion, but Skyrim is a masterpiece.

Skyrim takes place 200 years after Oblivion, and I don’t think you’ll get too much out of having played the earlier Elder Scrolls games.

On the front page they swapped the serious sam pack (episodes 1 and 2) for the gold pack (episodes 1, 2, and original games) and added a buck to it. But you can still get the double pack for $3… there’s no reason to have the old games too.

Anyway, I grabbed them because they apparently have goofy chaotic coop, so if anyone else wants to grab them too we’ll play some coop games sometime. Hour and a half left on that deal.

Civ 5 $10
Fear 3 $20
Tom Clancy franchise 75% off - splinter cells, ghost recons, hawx, rainbow 6, very cheap
Witcher franchise sale - The Witcher $2.50 Witcher 2 $24
Worms Reloaded $7 or 4 for $23.
Rage $30
Kane & Lynch Franchise 1 & 2 $3.75 each
Overlord Complete $5
Payday The Heist $10
Limbo $2.50
Cities XL 2012 $20
The Polynomial $2.50

Civ 5 is definitely worth $10. The Witcher Enhanced Edition is one of the most ridiculous steals ever at $2.50. Pretty much all of those Tom Clancy games are worth their price - $2.50 for most splinter cells, all the ghost recons, Rainbow 6 3, and the vegas games. Kane & Lynch 2 is worth that much if you have a friend to coop through it.

Wondering about Payday the heist, sounds like it might be interesting. Any good?

FEAR is a franchise sale too - Fear 1 for $5, Fear 2 for $7.50.

DLC also goes on sale with the game, so now is a good time to scoop up missing DLC you’ve been waiting for.

Woot–picking up Civ V. Decided against Deus Ex even at the $20 pricemark. If it were the first game on sale, I might’ve gotten it, but now that I’ve got some others, I’ll be well-tided over until the Christmas sale and beyond, so I’ll wait on Deus Ex.

I’ve just picked up Limbo for £1.74, EDGE for £2.74 and The Polynomial - Space of the music for £1.49.

I’ll be busy for a while - I still haven’t got round to playing most of the games I picked up in the summer sale!

I’ve bought Splinter Cell Conviction today and am thinking about the DLC for Civ V.

I picked up the $2.50 Witcher. Benefits of being dreadfully behind the gaming curve, I suppose.

New Deals:

Section 8: Prejudice $3.75
Thief: Deadly Shadows $5
Europa Universalis Franchise sale, EU3 $3.75
Dead Space 1/2 $5 each
Greed Corp $2.50
Driver San Francisco $25
Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga $10
Demolition Inc $2.50
Magic The Gathering 2012 $4
Call of Duty MW2 $15
Red Faction franchise 66% off, Armageddon $17
Fable 3 $25

Section 8 Prejudice is actually a really good game. It’s sort of like a dumbed down Tribes. The multiplayer isn’t very active but maybe this sale will give it a boost - I’ll be playing it again if it picks up.

Can’t recommend anything else. I’d specifically recommend against MW2 - it’s never been worth $15, and now that everyone is moving on to MW3 the multiplayer will be dead anyway. It might be worth it if you have a buddy to do the coop modes with I guess since some of those are pretty cool.

Today is the last day of the sale, so if you want anything that hasn’t been on dailies, now is the time. Btw, if you see something not on daily sale that’s a great deal anyway feel free to point it out.

I’m probably going to get a dungeon defenders 4 pack with some people for like $5.70 each or whatever it is. You guys can organize your own 4 packs or just buy it for $7.50 if you want in.

Driver: San Francisco is worth $25. Fun game.

Surprisingly expensive for a very old game, but it’s a pretty good game, one of the first stealthy FPS games.

I certainly got my money’s worth out of this at $5. Some folks become fanatical about it. Its learning curve is too steep, and its pace is too slow, for my tastes. I don’t usually have the several-hours-long stretches of time this game demands. (Which makes me wonder how I’ll manage Civ V now that I think about it. Oh well).

I quit the first one halfway through. It seemed to me like a poor port. Maybe with better controls I would have liked it more, but something was off, possibly a way-too-long delay between mouse movement and character response. It was very frustrating.

Likewise. And Divinity 2 for $10. For games with a short single person mode, these sales are great, because I rarely do multi-player. My play style is too slow for MP. (I know both of these are single, but for games like MW2).

I gambled $2.50 on Greed Corp, because I generally like turn-based strategy. I probably won’t get around to playing it for a while, though. I’m going to wait a while on Fable III, though.

That was my feeling. I might grab it if it ever drops lower, but I don’t need to now.

I was looking at EU, too. Their sale price ($3.75 for the game and first two expansions) looks attractive, but I couldn’t decide if the later two expansions, which are in a separate bundle at $7.50, were worth it. Grabbed them anyway.

I posted this on the SDMB steam group about Dungeon Defenders:

So anyway, if you want to give it a go, grab it. If you can organize a 4 pack and save a few bucks, great, if not it’s still only $7.50. If you want to find other people who want to go in on a 4 pack contact me and I’ll try to hook you up with each other.

Bought Red Faction Guerrilla for 3,39e and after a few hours with it I can recommend it to anybody who likes open world shooter/destruction thing. Haven’t seen many other games where you can actually blow up structures and see them collapse after you’ve managed to take out enough supporting beams. Glorious mayhem ensues.

I’ve played EU since it came out and the latter expansions add a lot to the game. So much so that I’d never play the game without them.
