There’s a demo available you can try. I’ve heard that the campaign is only 8-10 hours long, so $25 seems pricey to me.
I’m gambling $2.50 on Avadon because I enjoyed Spiderweb’s Exile and Avernum in the past. (I also find it amusing that I fired up Eschalon II again yesterday)
Torchlight is an indie Diablo clone that’ll fill a few afternoons (Steam says I got 22 hours out of it).
That’s by the same company?! Sold! I played me a few hundred hours of those Exile games (still play through all three games every couple years). Not much for graphics, but great game mechanics and balance, as well as very solid storyline progression.
Yeah. I’m playing through it now, and it definitely has some high points. It’s got some low points, too, though. Some of the gameplay feels really cheaply done, like the character customization (appearance), and some of the quest scripting, but so far the rest seems pretty high quality.
There are a few surprisingly difficult moments, and it can be a little difficult to find where you are supposed to be questing at your level, but I’ve definitely played games that handle the balance worse than this one. One thing that RPGers might not like is that there are some relatively difficult and annoying platform-y moments where your success is determined by your ability to jump over lava onto moving platforms, as opposed to using your character’s skills.
All in all, if you’re jonesing for some fantasy RPG fun, or really want to be a dragon, it’s worth your time, but it’s definitely not an all-time great.
Two non-Steam (but Steamworks) deals I snatched up earlier:
Renegade Ops is $2.99 on Amazon. This is going to be a daily deal later on in the Steam Sale, but considering it was $7.50 in the Thanksgiving sale, I doubt it’s going to be less than that.
Saints Row the Third is £14.99 ($23) on the UK THQ webstore. Non-UK credit cards work fine.
Amazon has Deus Ex: Human Revolution for $10, not only that but it comes with a $5 credit towards another digital purchase (in january only), so… yeah, every person reading this thread should probably do that.
They have Shogun 2 for $7.50 too. And DLC 75% off. 2010 AVP game $3. Napoleon Total War and Empire Total War $4 each. Rome and Medieval $2 each. Just Cause 2 $2.50. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light $2.50. Assassin’s Creed 2 $7. Tomy Clancy games all $3. Amazon is laying down some deals.
Twelve hours later, and the registration server still doesn’t work. At this point, I said “fuck this” and uninstalled the game.
And this from the guys who made Dune II?
The amazon $5 credit thing says that it can apply to any “top selling” pc download on amazon. I’m not sure what defines that category.
I’m going to roll the dice on Blur at $5. Car combat game with 20 players online sounds like it might be pretty awesome. If anyone else wants to play, that’d be great, we’ll organize some games.
By the way, the deals actually last 28 hours this year. There’s actually a 4 hour period after the new deals appear where yesterday’s deals appear along the bottom of the screen. So you might not have missed out when you thought you did.
New deals:
Rage $15
Train Simulator 2012 $3.50 (or with all DLC, a mere $300!)
From Dust $7.50
AVP 2010 $4
Saints Row 3 $33.50
Back to the Future (telltale) $10
Frozen Synapse $3.75
Cave Story+ $5
Audiosurf $2.50
E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy $2.50
Cities XL 2012 $20

Okay, everyone who hasn’t played Cave Story when it was free, and likes Metroidvanias should buy it. It is one of the greats. Also, seriously awesome soundtrack.
But if you’re going to buy it, best to get it through the Humble Indie Bundle #4, as Palooka mentioned. For virtually the same price you can get Cave Story plus another 10 games or so. http://www.humblebundle.com/
Ended up doing this (and thanks for the note) as goddamned Chase was declining my goddamned card just because I bought one $5 game yesterday and tried for one today. Yet I see that it’s still listed as a pending charge now that I check online. That had better disappear.
I’ve been going over and checking things out the past few days, but thought it would possibly be better to ask here: has Civ 5 been one of the daily deals yet? I’d really like to try it, but don’t want to spend $25 only to find that the next day it goes on sale for $5.
I have a Mac, btw, and was also wondering if Duke Nukem Forever was worth the $10?
I wouldn’t buy it. Not just because it’s a bad game, but also because I don’t want to reward the sorts of decisions that apparently went into it.
FifthYear is right. Get the humble bundle. It’s a great deal.
Is Cities XL worth $20? I’d love to play a SimCity type game again.
Turns out they allowed the purchase to go through, even though it was listed as denied.
You don’t understand. I just bought “Just Cause 2” for $2.50 and got a $5 credit. That means I make $2.50 with each purchase. I’ll be a millionaire in no time!
BTW, can anyone recommend a good but juvenile driving game for my kids? I don’t want the super realistic driving games, I want one more like Mario Kart on the N-64 that I enjoyed about 20 years ago.
I’d go with Mario Kart on the Wii; it’s awesome.
