This isn’t as big as the Christmas sale will be, but it’s big enough to warrant its own thread, especially since the unusual format this year will probably allow us to do a few group buys and we can use this thread to coordinate it.
Steam is having what they’re calling the “give and get” sale. The “get” part is that 30 accounts per day get the top 5 games on their wishlist randomly. The “gift” part is that they’re selling “gift packs” for games where you can pick up 5-10 copies of a game for cheap and then gift them to your friends. This is alongside lots of different daily sales every day, although they aren’t discounting the entire catalog like they typically do at Christmas.
Today’s (Wednesday) daily sales:
Borderlands $10
Deus Ex Collection $5
Prototype $15
Alpha Protocol $7.50
Sam & Max: The Devils Playhouse (5 episodes) $10.50
Indie Energy Pack (Quantz, Galcon Fusion, Protogalaxy, Brainpipe: A Plunge to Unhumanity, Gridrunner revolution) $5
R.U.S.E. $33.50
Counter-Strike: Source $5
Shank $10
And the gift pack deals:
Deus Ex: Game of the Year, 8 copies for $12 ($1.50 each, 83% off)
Borderlands: 6 copies for $40 ($6.60 each, 66% off)
Half-life 2: 10 games for $20 ($2 each, 77% off)
R.U.S.E.: $150 for 6 games ($25 each, 50% off)
We can coordinate group buys if there’s interest - one person buys the game, gifts it to everyone else, and they send their share in via paypal to the purchaser. I already have the first 3 games and I won’t be buying RUSE at a high price so I won’t be coordinating any of these games for a group buy, but someone else can if they want. I’ll see what tomorrow brings.
Thought I’d mention too that impulse is having a sale for thanksgiving too. Most notably dragon age ultimate edition for $25 is a good deal (game, expansion, all DLC).
Works fine for me. The only time the website gets really bogged down is when they announce the new deals (10am pacific) and 5-10 million people are all hammering away trying to get them at the earliest possible time.
Heh I started to copy the day 2 sale but realised everything would be in pounds which wouldn’t mean much to most dopers.
If you don’t have Defense Grid buy it (unless you hate tower defense or fun for a great price). Also the Indie Pack looks really good.
I’m always tempted by Left for Dead 2 but I don’t think I’d play it much considering how little I play against/with other people online. Plus I doubt 5 other people would go in on it.
Eve Online: Tyrannis $5
Defense Grid: The Awakening $2.50
Cities XL 2011 $30
Deathspank $10
Indie Story Pack (And Yet It Moves, Gish, Jolly Rover, Puzzle Agent, Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale) $5
Audiosurf $2.50
Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY $10
Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days $5
and the gift pack deals
Defense Grid 10 pack for $15 ($1.50 each)
Audiosurf 12 pack for $20 ($1.66 each)
L4D2 6 pack for $25 ($4.16 per game)
Puzzle Quest 2 10 pack for $35 ($3.50 per game)
I won’t be organizing any gift pack deals since I have everything, but if 6 of you want to get together to snag l4d2 for a crazy low price, go nuts. Just have one guy buy them and everyone else paypal him back their share.
Defense Grid is very fun, definitely worth $2.50. Same with audiosurf. I’ll probably grab Batman at $10, people tell me it’s great. At $1 a game, I’m probably gonna grab all these indie packs.
I found a leaked list of what gift packs and what indie packs will become available. I wasn’t sure if it was a hoax until today, when it correctly predicted the deals.
Putting it in a spoiler box in case, like me, steam sales are your Christmas morning and you don’t want to know all in advance (It doesn’t list the single game daily deals - just gift packs and indie bundles)
Aliens vs Predator (2010) 6-pack
Audiosurf 12-pack
Braid 10-pack
Counter-Strike: Source 6-pack
Defense Grid: The Awakening 10-pack
Empire: Total War 6-pack
Freedom Force 10-pack
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City 6-pack
Just Cause 2 8-pack
Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West 10-pack
Left 4 Dead 2 6-pack
Mount & Blade: Warband 6-pack
Nyxquest: Kindred Spirits 10-pack
Osmos 12-pack
Portal 6-pack
Puzzle Quest 2 10-pack
Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale 8 pack
Red Faction: Guerrilla 8-pack
Splinter Cell: Conviction 6-pack
Trine 8-pack
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising 8-pack
World of Goo 12-pack
Also, there will be more packs of indie games similar to today’s Indie Energy Pack. 5 game per pack, on massive discount, one day only. Again, I don’t know the daily order these will come in, or exactly what the discount will be, but, here’s what the names and contents of the packs will be:
Indie Air Pack: Altitude, DogFighter, Flotilla, Gratuitous Space Battles, Plain Sight
Indie Clever Pack: Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time, Eufloria, Iron Grip: Warlord, VVVVVV, World of Goo
Indie Pulse Pack: Audiosurf, Beat Hazard, Bit Trip Beat, The Polynomial, Rhythm Zone
Indie Story Pack: And Yet It Moves, Gish, Puzzle Agent, Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale, Jolly Rover
All of the indie packs are great deals, some of them incredible.
I may also, depending on price, be organizing group buys for Empire: Total War, Just Cause 2, and Mount & Blade: Warband. Tell me if you’re interested, and feel free to organize your own.
Wow, usually during these sales since there are millions of people downloading their huge new games, the downloads slow down well below typical speed. But Steam is sending me Batman AA (which Kinthalis gifted to me because he is awesome) at 2.4MB/s.
I loved the idea of Recettear but the game is way too simple. It’s a weak trading game melded with a weak action RPG. I really wish that the economy side of it was ten times more complex and the action part of it was cut.
I could do with less anime humour as well but that might be a big plus to people if they enjoy it. On sale it’s more then worth $1 but I wouldn’t pay more then $5 for it.
Well if we’re starting wishlists I would go out for anyone buying the Left 4 Dead 2 pack. If 3 other people go for it I’d be willing to suck up the balance. The costs would be £2.49 per game which with the exchange rate might even be less than the US sale.
Just Cause 2 if it comes under £5 I might go for though I wouldn’t be willing to be the primary buyer.
Turns out the Batman game is pretty awesome so far. I don’t normally like that style of melee combat but the game makes it fun. Good blend of stealth/action/minor puzzles so far, good production values. If you like that sort of game I definitely recommend it at $10.
I also grabbed Kane & Lynch 2. It’s probably crap, with a bad meta rating, but the most common complaint seemed to be the lack of content - which, in a $50 game, sucks, but for $5 what the hell. It looks like it might satisfy the mindless shoot em in the face urge that Soldier of Fortune used to. It has multiplayer coop so it can’t be all bad.
Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box $15
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II Gold (game + expansion) $13.60
Machinarium $5
Tropical 3 Gold $7.50
Torchlight $5
Empire Total War: $15
Arma II: Operation Arrowhead $20
Blur $15
Indie Clever Pack (Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time, Eufloria, Iron Grip: Warlord, VVVVVV, World of Goo) $5
Ultimate Box was on sale for half that price a few month ago when I got it, so that’s dissapointing. Torchlight is definitely worth $5 if you like action RPGs. I was hoping Blur and Empire TW would be about half of what they are now. Machinarium is an interesting indie game. The Indie Clever pack is definitely worth it - World of Goo is worth the $5 alone.
Gift packs:
Freedom Force 10 pack $7.50 ($0.75 per game)
Portal 6 pack for $15 ($2.50 per game)
Warhammer 40K DOW2: Chaos Rising 8 pack for $40 ($5 per game)
Empire Total War 6 pack for $60 ($10 per game)
If it’s like COH (also done by relic) then go ahead and install both. The new campaigns will be listed seperately and you’ll have more races to use in multiplayer. They probably use the same game executable for both, just adding content if you own the expansion, so there’s nothing to lose.
I’ve got it for PS3, but yes, it’s a pretty excellent game. One of those rare license successes you hear about.
DOWII annoys me, because I have the base game but not the expansion - I think i’ll wait and see if they have the expansion for less over christmas, since i’m not all that bothered about it and there’s plenty of other interesting stuff at the moment.
Anyone know anyone who’s won their top 5 wishlist yet?
