Steam Summer Sale 2012 - Deals and News here

Theif is a flash deal. $2.49
It’s got a 92 matascore.

Any reason I shouldn’t jump at this one?

Deadly Shadows is one of my favourite games.

Yeah, Dragon Age Ultimate Edition is amongst the best deals in gaming history at $7.50.

Thief is a fairly old game. Not sure if that bothers you, or if it needs any sort of tweaking to run right on modern systems.

Dunno? Because you can get the bundle instead?

Steam games are usually pretty well optimized for modern systems. I don’t know what they do exactly, but I know GOG for example uses DOSBox loaders and such.

If someone is only getting one, get Shadow of Chernobyl. If you’re only getting two, get SoC & Call of Pripyat. Clear Sky is the undisputed least favorite of the community although I’m sure it has its supporters. If you’re not adverse to modding a game before you play it, I recommend getting the Complete 2009 mod which fixes some AI issues, updates the graphics, adds some quality of life improvements and other technical fixes without altering the core game or its plot.

For anyone unsure what the game is about, it’s a FPS with some RPG elements to it that takes place in an alternate history version of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. It’s open world and you’ll find some assorted minor quests aside from the main plot but it’s not as RPG oriented as Fallout 3/NV or games like that. The game was made by a Ukrainian studio and the world has a definite Soviet era bleakness to it with some horror elements later in the game. I enjoyed it.

Thief is old. I sure liked it at the time, but I’m not sure I’d be able to deal with the graphics now. I bought Deadly Shadows, though; it’s the newest of the bunch.

You kids and your graphics obsession.

Thief is only 1 year and 12 days older than Planescape: Torment, a game which has a current (i.e. non-zombie) thread going. I don’t know if there is a graphics upgrade patch but many older games do, like System Shock 2.

Speaking of zombies, those parts were my least favorite part of Thief, and I still haven’t finished it. I picked up one of the games from a Steam sale awhile back.

Yeah, Thief 1 had a few too many Tomb Raider segments, because they weren’t sure the game could stand on stealth alone. The many, many complaints about those segments led to a much more focused Thief 2, which I consider one of the better games ever made. It’s still quite playable, because so much of the gameplay is keyed on lighting & silhouettes, sound and head-space.

Deadly Shadows is easily the weakest of the three, though it still has its moments, especially if you’re a fan of horror stuff.

I played one of the Thief games almost until the end. Not gonna spoiler a decade-old game for something trivial, so here was the problem:

There some massive level consisting of underground caverns patrolled by tons of guards. I dealt with it through my favorite technique of mass-sapping: sneak up, konk the schmuck, drag his body into the shadows somewhere, rinse, repeat.

At some point I find a note saying that I need to retrieve a key from a guy who comes out of a particular room. Well, I waited, and he didn’t come out of the room, presumably because at some point I’d conked him and dragged his body into the shadows.

I spent about an hour retracing my steps through the caverns. Never did find they or the key. Never did play the game again.

But it’s been many years; maybe the sting of failure has finally left me, and I can try it again :).

Anno 2070 is $20 (60% off) at GamersGate this weekend. Not cheap enough for me but cheaper than Steam’s 50% deal so if you’re on the fence maybe this will sway you.

I picked up the Thief bundle, because Thief 2 is one of my favorite games ever, and I haven’t played any of the others. Even if all I do is replay Thief 2, it’s worth the $6.74 IMO.

I picked up the Total War bundle yesterday. I’ve never played any of the games so I expect to get more than my money’s worth out of it. I started up with Rome last night and I’m enjoying it.

The Thief series is still one of the greatest sneakers ever. Even Deadly Shadows is pretty good for what basically amounts to a console port. The Steam versions of the first two games come with DDFix, which allows you to run them on modern high-resolution systems (with widescreen, even). Please note, though, that the DDFix that comes with Steam is pretty old; follow the instructions on this Steam thread to get the lastest update. That thread also points you to texture mods, additional missions, and other enhancements.

Probably should reinstall my Total War games. Picked up the bundle back when History Channel(?) was using the engine for reenactments but I never did much with it.

Rome is my favorite in the series. Rome II is due out next year

If you’re going to play Rome, you should pick up Rome: Total Realism mod for it.

I can’t tell if Fallout NV is a franchise sale because the sale page isn’t working at the moment.

Anyone know anything about Nexuiz? Looks interesting, it’s been a while since I’ve played any arena shooters, but I hadn’t heard of it until now.

Fallout 3 is now $4.99, FYI.

I’ve mentioned it a few times but it seems apropos to do it again:

Sniper Elite V2 is on sale for $15 at Amazon and activates on Steam (you’re just buying the Steam key)

Witcher 2 is available for $13.50 from GOG.com or bundled with the original Witcher for $16.50. Does not activate on Steam but it is DRM free.

As an aside: is there any way to tell whether a given game will do this? I know Skyrim did the same, to my surprise. Fallout 3 didn’t, for example.
