Steam Winter Sale 2012: Deals and News Here

Oh, and natural selection 2 is fantastic. It’s trip back to FPS games before they were stupid and consolized. Gameplay wise, it feels like a game that could’ve come out in 2002, and if you know me, you’d know that’s a really high compliment. It requires (and rewards) more teamwork than any FPS I’ve ever played, the asymetrical combat is awesome, just great all around. If planetside 2 hadn’t taken over my life, I’d be playing it every day.

Don’t bother with Tropico 3. Tropico 4 has substantially more features, especially if you count DLC. As for DLC, Modern Times is very good, but the rest are optional at best. Each small DLC includes a new building, a new trait or two, some new decorations, and most importantly a new mission. I have the plantador, quick-dry cement, generalissimo, and megalopolis DLCs. The plantation is only handy if you don’t have Modern Times (or are playing the original campaign, which doesn’t use the more modern building upgrades); cement factories can make a huge difference if you build them early; the bunker isn’t very useful (but I like to build them instead of guard stations); the conventillo was a real letdown and pretty much worthless; all four missions are really fun, though. I personally will be keeping an eye out for the pirate and vigilante DLCs, though I’m not super-interested in them.

I’m thinking of getting the first Borderlands. Does it have decent single-player content?

I’ve only played MP once, but I’ve gone through the SP campaign with each of the protagonists, and after about a year, I did it again (lamenting the dearth of good SP FPS games).

Tropico 4 is by far the best in the series - the graphics are sharper, the micro-goals are usually straightforward & rewarded, and there’s a fair bit more information available than in the previous versions…like how long it’ll be before the next cargo ship comes in.

Re: the Tropico 4 bunker…no it’s a huge deal - it’s twice as many troops as a watchtower with no requirement of a general. Hugely useful for rebel-prone islands.

Yes, I thought so. I was disappointed by the expansions, though. I guess Mad Moxxi is nice if you want to swap gear between your characters, but found the game content impossible in SP. One of them also allows you to progress beyond level 50. I played part of the Robot Revolution DLC. One of the quests was to collect 150 robot parts. It was like they were trying to come up with the most tedious missions possible.

Thanks all for the tips on Tropico 4. So… just get Modern Times?

Has anyone tried Wargame European escalation? How did you find it?

Well, it depends on the price of the other DLCs. If you can get them all for a few bucks more, I’d say go for it. The extra missions are quite fun; the megalopolis DLC may have a lackluster building, but the mission and the trait are good IMO.

No general requirement to build. You still get all of the “not enough generals” problems if you build bunkers instead of guard stations. The bunkers are also bigger than guard towers, so you’re not saving that much space.

If you’re into racing games, Race: the WTCC Game + Caterham Expansion is on sale for a whole $1.19 down from a base price of $51 before discounts.

Also, the Dawn of War Franchise bundle looks to be a pretty good deal for $20. Don’t get the “Complete Pack” which has less stuff for $10 more.

Definitely the Modern times DLC. It is the biggest DLC and includes an entire campaign and several new buildings. All of the other DLCs contain (normally) just one extra building, one new characteristic and one new map. Out of all of them, the most useful is the Plantador pack. It lets you build plantations, which will have you cranking out sugar, coffee or whatever at an amazing rate.

The game is 66% off right now, and looks to stay that way through the entire sale. The only way the price would drop lower is if it is included in a publisher pack.

And upon posting I see others have said basically the same thing. Good luck!

Not a Steam sale, sadly, but Mass Effect 3, Deluxe Digital Dowload Edition, is on sale, half-off, for 19.99 at their EA/Origin/Bioware site.

I’m not real happy with what I’ve heard about their service lately, and I wish they’d allow for a Steam download with this installment, as they have with the first two. But, well, it’s ME, and I figure at this price I’ll go ahead and finish off the story since the first two games were at the top of my favorites list.

Has anyone played Ys Origin? It looks like it might be fun in an old-school kind of way. Or it might be lame. I can’t really tell from the screenshots and trailer.

Ys Origin is one of the best Ys games, which means it is one of the best action games out there.

But in my opinion the best Ys game, and arguably the best action game ever made, is Ys: Oath in Felghana. Which is also on sale right now, for even cheaper.

Latest flash sales, expiring 9 hours from now:
F1 Race Stars - $2.49
Amnesia: The Dark Descent - $4.99
Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers - $4.99

Sleeping Dogs at GMG is $11.90 (use code GMG30-DPLIM-DN831) with the additional offer of $4 cash back refunded to you or $6 in GMG store credit.

Damn, they’re really fucking over Mac users this year. So far I think everything that’s been on sale except Borderlands has been PC only.

Mac users are fucking themselves over. Is it even possible to buy a Mac without knowing that they have a severely restricted selection of games, and that it’s been that way for decades?

It’s not too bad, two of the games on flash sale right now are Amnesia: Dark Descent and Counterstrike: Global Offensive. Plus, a whole shit ton of the regular sales are Mac-compatible, including most of the Valve line.

I have an iMac and I just boot into windows when I want to play Windows-only games. No big.
