Can someone explain the Steinbrenner/Jeeter Visa commercial for me? Basically, it has Derrick Jeeter (Yankees shortstop) sitting in front of George Steinbrenner (Yankees owner).
Steinbrenner says to Jeeter: “You’re our starting shortstop. How can you afford to spend 2 nights carousing, 3 nights eating out, and 2 nights with friends” or something to that effect.
I imagine Derrick Jeeter can afford to do anything his heart desires. Since Steinbrenner signs Jeeter’s paychecks, he should know that too.
Every time I see the commercial I ask myself why Steinbrenner is asking Jeeter how he can afford to go out at night.
The commercial plays off an earlier incident where Steinbrenner was unhappy with Jeter’s reported partying and carousing about the town, when he had to play baseball the next day. When Steinbrenner asks how Jeter can “afford” it, he means “how can you party so much and still play ball successfully?” Yeah, it’s pretty lame, but whaddaya expect from the likes of those two?
Fiddle Peghead is right about what it reference to the Boss’s whinging. But it’s true that the commercial makes no sense. It seems like it’s about the carousing thing, but it’s really about money. And I’m pretty sure Derek Jeter has the second-highest salary in baseball, so there’s not much out there he can’t afford.
It also bugs me how in the commercial Derek Jeeter is just waving hello to everybody in sight, y’know, like “hey, what’s up?”. Does he really have that many random nightclub acquaintances?
Yes, the commercial is extremely lame and makes no sense. IIRC aren’t all of those Visa commercials for that ad campaign about expensive places (Olympics, fancy restaurants, etc) that you need a lot of money for in the first place. I guess they finally decided to actually show how rich you need to be in order to afford them.
dantheman, good for them? Steinbrenner is the one who makes these comments and makes sure the press reports them in order to get his message across to the team. Then he appears in the commercial joking about the whole thing. Funny how he wasn’t in a joking mood about it until Visa offered him a ton of money to do the commercial.
Disclaimer: I am a Mets fan and pretty much hate everything Yankee related.
What I really like is how the commercial trumpets how VISA is used at a number of NY nightspots that only the wealthy or well-connected have a chance in hell of getting into.
You are right I shouldn’t hate pretty much everything, I should hate everything Yankee related.
freido, you break my heart. All Queens’ residents should be Mets fans. Didn’t you see the movie Frequency? In fact anyone who doesn’t live in the Bronx should be raised to hate the Damn Yankees. I question your loyalty. Would you root for Canada in a war against the US?
Well, yeah, good for them. He’s a zillionaire. You really think it matters to him that Visa gave him money to appear in an ad? Of course not. But one thing that does matter to King George is how he looks. He is, I’m sure you’re aware, a very egocentric kinda guy, and it’s not common for people like that to want to allow themselves to be made fun of.
