Step Right Up and Help Name the Baby.

How about Caelie? I’ve always liked that name.

“Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.”

Cleo, that’s a good one - or Chloe, too.

Pilar
Daisy
Lily
Magdalene

I guess I like the flower names. I have a friend who named his daughter Magnolia (he fancied himself a bit of a deadhead). Thought it was stupid at first, but it suits her well, though she usually goes by Maggie.

How 'bout

Kirsten
Asia
Elsa
Jade
Pagan

Just my 2 cents worth…

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Name her “You”. Then you don’t have to go to all the trouble of remembering a name. You can just say “Hey, you!” And think about all the confusion You would cause when referring to You. You, get over here. You stop that.

Cleo and Callie, which have both been mentioned are pet’s names, not people’s names!

Well, Siobhan can be mistaken for a guy (it is, after all, a variant on the original from which Sean came).

My sister is Kieran (alternatively, Kiran or Ciaran). (He was one of Patrick’s buddy bishops, but few know that, now.) Down side, we always call her Kerry, although you don’t have to start that habit.

I will warn you about trying to defend against the dreaded -y. When I was growing up we knew a family whose mom was from England. She hated the habit (that she claimed was American) of adding the -y to every nickname. She very carefully picked her son’s names: Kevin and (I think) Keith. She then spent the next 10 or 12 years grinding her teeth into her gums as all the neighbor kids came to the back door and called out “Is Kevvy home? How about Keithy?”

(I would just resign yourself to the problem.)

Tom~

Name her Magrat, and watch the teeth really clench.

(Discworlders, of course will get this one. )

I vote for Lucinda
Also Miriam, Martha, Elaine, Mabel, Ina.

I vote against Allison–geez I know a ZILLION! Ditto for Caitlin, Madison, Kathryn, Sarah, Madylin (hate the strange spelling–also bound to be popular due to Madeline books), Keely and any name ending in ee sound.

NOTE: Deborah is pronounced De-bo-ra with accent on the first syllable–DO NOT EVER CALL ME Debra!!! Or I will BE MAD!

Hey, Deborah is a beautiful name–means honeybee in Hebrew! And think about the heritage–the great judge of Israel who led the army to victory!

Shirly, you could just name the little sweetie after your own self!

Well, Shirley, I have a cousin whose last name is O’Hare and her three girls are named
Faerin
Terren
(they’re twins–yuck on the rhyming names)
Noah

I like Noah for a girl.

There you go.

Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball.

Tegan is nice, although you should probably teach your son how to pronounce it properly now, before she is doomed to a lifetime of being called “Tee Tee”. These things have a way of sticking.

Although I love the name Caleigh, I think you should stay clear of any name beginning with a “K” or “BR” sound if you want to avoid anything trendy.

I’ve being thinking about naming my hypothetical daughter Flannery. The only drawback I can see to that is people saying “Oh, like Flannery O’Conner” and giggling in that self-satisfied little way that people have when they think that they are so clever.

I also like “Auden”, but it sounds a bit too much like “odd and”.

Narile,

She could always name her Elspeth Margaret Note Spelling . . .

According to a friend of mine you have the first year to change your mind before the name is set in official stone and it becomes a hassle to change it. She never did like her daughter’s compromise middle name and teases that she’ll just mail in the form before the deadline and see how long it takes her husband to notice.

So how about giving your daughter a Name-A-Month (Week? Day? Now there’s a calendar!) and choose the one that sticks.

Ferren and Terren? Eweeee, that is almost, but not quite, as bad as Ryan Merle and Bryan Earle for twins. From Texas, no less. True Story. Who are these people who do such unspeakable things like this to their children and why aren’t they beaten?

Tom - I have resigned myself to the dreaded nickname situation but I handle it with a stiff upper lip and a sense of humor (and a big stick behind my back). One of my friends dad calls my son Carsten, Car for short. I said to him, " If I wanted to name him after a moving vehicle, I would have called him
(really) Otto. (Which I think is waay cooler of a name than anything else out there, but we’re weird.) And if we called our son Otto Arndt, it would sound like a car that wouldn’t run." End of problem.

The problem with Siobhan is 1) no one can pronounce it and 2) no one can pronounce it.

I might just go with unifying the polarized white and black communities by naming our daughter " LaQwerty" for my love of typing.

I knew a guy named “Chris” in college…full name was Christian Buddhist Sphere.

Uke

Given the choices, I’d say Tegan.
Keely is just…yech.
Alternately, Regan sounds as good as Tegan. To go along Celtic lines I also like Moira, Maeve and Sian (pronounced shawn), although the latter two have only one syllable and is therefore, outside your criteria.
If you want classical-Biblical how about Leah, Judith, Tirzah, Tamar, or Jemima?

Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience - this is the ideal life. --Mark Twain

Svetlana? Almost impossible to shorten.

Seriously, I like Maureen, but “Maureen O’Hara Arndt” won’t do. I have a niece named Lara, which I like, but Lara O’Hara won’t do, either. My mother wanted to name me Lark (What can I say, I was the 4th girl). Thank God calmer heads prevailed.

How about Kerry? It keeps the Irish spelling, can’t be shortened and isn’t trendy (that I know of).

StG

Dave - Siobahn is Gaelic for Joan. I believe the proper pronounciation is Shevon.

oooh! I like Narile’s suggestions!

Chloe or Clio!

Gee, if you’re considering laQwerty, go all the way and call her Etaoin Shrdlu!

Tom~

Callie is not a pet’s name, dammit! It’s my Grandmother’s name. Now hang your head in shame!
