Stephen Colbert applying for 501 (c) (4) status for his Super PAC

I was under the impression that he dissolved it last year. But last night he had his lawyer on the show and signed some forms to apply for 501 © (4) status from the IRS as part of a bit about the recent scandals.

So, is he reviving his Super PAC, or am I wrong in thinking that he actually dissolved it in the first place?

I think he just funneled the money from is regular PAC into the SHHH super pac so that he could then pay it out to himself w/o leaving a paper trail. I didn’t watch the video, but it looks like you might be thinking of this show.

I think I remember something about him giving the money that the Super PAC had received to a charity, like Donors Choose or one for veterans. Maybe you’re remembering that as well? I can’t watch videos right now, so I don’t know if that’s the one **deltasigma ** linked to or not. But I’m guessing he kept his PAC alive so that he could use it again on the show if needed, like he did last night.

Also I have to say that I love Stephen Colbert and almost every episode of the show, but I especially love the stuff he does about the Super PACs. His use of his Colbert Super PAC allows him to clearly explain what Super PACs are and how they are used and how ridiculous the system is, and it’s not something that many other people were explaining.

That’s my recollection also. Of course we don’t know how much he gave to charity, and how much is still in the SHHH Super PAC - which is kind of the point.
I think he deserves a Pulitzer for this sequence of shows, because it is the absolute best illustration of the absurdity of the system out there. Co-awarded to his lawyer, who might do most of the work and who is excellent.

He did win a Peabody Award (for broadcast journalism) for the Super PAC shows.

The money was given to a couple of charities and public interest groups. There may not be any money in the 501(c)(4) at this point - he could be filing for that status just as an extension of the joke.
