Steve Martin's Carrie Fisher RIP tweet: does it offend you?

Without having really read the thread, this is how I see it:

I would say that the biggest male fantasy in nerd-dom is Princess Leia in her bikini. This is also tends to be one of the lasting images from the original trilogy, for better or for worse. The second half is him reminding everyone that underneath all of that she has some real depth. I thought it was a nice sentiment.

I’m a bit confused as to why someone would be offended.

I’m a bit disappointed in Steve Martin. He said something sweet and endearing and let some nameless hacks diminish it. He should re-post it.

What makes this even more phenomenally stupid is, Steve Martin is one of the most kindest, down to earth celebs our there.

An especially admirable trait when you consider Steve’s profession.

I thought the sentiment was a bit clunky (in a “beauty AND brains, who’da thunk it?” way) , but I wasn’t offended.

For a certain subset of feminists, it seems that any male publicly expressing any form of physical attraction to women is unacceptable and must be shouted down. See, for example, when Simon Pegg tweeted his appreciation of a bevy of Slave Leias.

Publicly commenting on a woman’s physical appearance is generally a bad idea, especially on Twitter and other social media. Few if any benefits for doing it, but a whole lot of potential downsides.

Agreed, Martin caved way to easily. He should repost it along with a healthy dose of “go pound sand” to anyone who doesn’t like it.

Nothing other than a compliment. People should leave him alone.

What he should have said: “Well, excuuuuuuuse me.”

Teh Stoopid is strong in them.

I suspect that the woman who wrote Postcards from the Edge would have told them to get over themselves.

Excellent!

Yes.

If we had a like button, I’d totally press it.

I thought it was a very sweet tribute. I’m starting to think some people have a fetish for being offended.

Yup. And what you said too SA. “go pound sand”

And the fact that Steve Martin actually apologized is why liberalism is associated with being a pathetic pussy.

I think that should do it for a poll. I had to take my best guess as to the question you wanted for it. Someone vote in it and test it out.

Aside: This is actually the first poll I’ve made, for myself or anyone else.

I voted “I do not find this at all outdated and sexist,” and would like to add I don’t give a furry little rat’s ass if anyone does.

Buck up and grow thicker skins, hissies!

I dunno, I did actually find it a bit offensive and tasteless given the circumstances. It sort of reads like, ‘when I was young (and she was too), she was beautiful. As time passed she wasn’t beautiful but luckily she became witty and bright with age.’ I can really see both sides of it, the people who find it offensive and those who don’t. I really do get a bit defensive about someone mentioning a woman’s appearance/beauty as a compliment, especially if it’s the first thing said. But I also recognize I have some issues myself with how I see men so I try to take it with a grain of salt. Basically, it could have been worded better, and I do think there’s a small amount of age-related underlying misogyny there but overall not the worst thing in the world.
