Without having really read the thread, this is how I see it:
I would say that the biggest male fantasy in nerd-dom is Princess Leia in her bikini. This is also tends to be one of the lasting images from the original trilogy, for better or for worse. The second half is him reminding everyone that underneath all of that she has some real depth. I thought it was a nice sentiment.
I’m a bit confused as to why someone would be offended.
For a certain subset of feminists, it seems that any male publicly expressing any form of physical attraction to women is unacceptable and must be shouted down. See, for example, when Simon Pegg tweeted his appreciation of a bevy of Slave Leias.
Publicly commenting on a woman’s physical appearance is generally a bad idea, especially on Twitter and other social media. Few if any benefits for doing it, but a whole lot of potential downsides.
I dunno, I did actually find it a bit offensive and tasteless given the circumstances. It sort of reads like, ‘when I was young (and she was too), she was beautiful. As time passed she wasn’t beautiful but luckily she became witty and bright with age.’ I can really see both sides of it, the people who find it offensive and those who don’t. I really do get a bit defensive about someone mentioning a woman’s appearance/beauty as a compliment, especially if it’s the first thing said. But I also recognize I have some issues myself with how I see men so I try to take it with a grain of salt. Basically, it could have been worded better, and I do think there’s a small amount of age-related underlying misogyny there but overall not the worst thing in the world.
