Stewert Sandwiches were controlled by two former Navy reservists, Ted Broecker and Van Hugh Cunningham, initially both franchisees. They started buying out other franchises and eventually made a run for the parent company. Once they were in control moved the operation and headquarters to Norfolk, Va. Eventually, they bought the Virginia Squires basketball team from Earl Foreman. Listeria found at the production facility in Norfolk brought on a myriad of lawsuits, coupled with a rise in fast foods and stiffer competition, brought eventual bankruptcy. They had a great product and great run.
