Stick a needle in my eye

I have been considering the ol’ radial keratotomy for a while now. I have a pretty good handle on the medical aspects of it, and according to my optometrist, my results will be satisfactory.

I’m just wondering if any of you guys out there have had this procedure. Were your results good? What was the operation like? The idea of being awake while a laser is used on my little eyebulbs makes me extremely nervous.

My prescription for my left eye is -9.5, and for my right it’s -10. Blind as a bat. The good doctor says the procedure would get me up to the point where I could pass a driver’s license test (ok, not an especially high standard). Although I would still need some light corrective lenses, I love the idea of being less dependent on my contacts/glasses. So it seems worthwhile, but all the same… yikes!

Any advice, insight, words of wisdom?

No opinion, as I go the other way, myself. I’m so damn used to my glasses that I look weird to myself without them; I’m going to keep them. I’m just curious why you’re considering over RK over LASIK. Medical reason? LASIK not available in your area? Other?
