Dublin Rose becoming a laughing stock with her display of “hip hop” dancing. :smack:
The Rose Of Tralee is beauty contest of sorts where each competitor must do a party piece. Sometimes they’re amazing, sometimes they’re inept and sometimes they’re like the linked video…
I’m not sure if it was the cameraman’s fault or the editor (or whatever the TV equivalent is) but I couldn’t see a damn thing. The camera spent half the time way to close to her and the other half the time not on her. We should have seen this from a camera in the audience.
First impression: well, she’s quite attractive, so I could care less if she could dance well. But then I tried to be more objective. And…
Meh. Didn’t look any worse than the hired house dancers I see at local dance clubs. Didn’t look so much like hip hop, more house/club dance (and the music was certainly not hip hop, but electronic dance music).
The big problem that I saw is that you need to be able to see the leg moves/steps in club dance, to be able to see if the dancer’s steps can follow the beat (with the tempo of the song used, maybe at 4:1, as 1:1 or 2:1 would be too much). Feet meeting the beat is probably the most important part of club dance, but she was wearing a long dress that hid her leg movements, and the cameraman barely showed her feet. So, she might be a good club dancer, but costuming and camerawork makes it impossible to tell. She really should have been wearing pants, shorts, a shorter dress/skirt, or tights for her routine.
Her prancing around is normal for club dancing, too. Energetic dance music is supposed to make people move around, not stay in place. Her upper body movements were pretty normal-- interpretive of the music, and mostly raised with the upbeat feel. It looks bad because the only movements we can really see her making are her upper body moves and the jumping around… neither of which are necessarily supposed to match the beat of the music, but since it’s the only visual cue we get of whether she’s synced to the music, it looks weird.
I was about to say…what little I could see of her “moves” were actually in-time with the beat, and she didn’t look all the awkward. Part of being a good dancer is selling what you’re doing…
And she wasn’t doing hip-hop dancing, as already stated. She may not be a good hip-hop dancer, but that wasn’t hip-hop.
I wish the cameraman had actually focused on her. At worst, she’s probably just a mediocre dancer. And that’s still better than most people I see at the club.
Yeah, this came up when I was talking about this with some friends who are into dance on FB; she looks like she’s having fun, which is the big sell, and frankly the point of club dance. We’d love to have more regulars on the floor like her.
