still another computer question...

I’ve received a file from a business partner that is in Adobe pdf format. Adobe Reader 5.0 can’t open the file and tells me the “file is damaged and cannot be repaired”.

I checked my Norton Utilities disc and found nothing there that might fix it. My partner will be back in her office on Monday but I was hoping there is an application or software that can repair this file so I can print it out this weekend. I’m running Mac OS9.1 if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

If ‘received’ means by email, get them to send it again…it’s possible that it was corrupted during the transfer.

And if they can’t send it again, it’s worth the minor effort of going through the steps of receiving it again at your end: turn off the computer, then back on, then start your e-mail, open the e-mail with the attachement, save the attachment again (use a different name), then try reading the newly saved file.
This is not very likely to work, but it’s not much effort either.

You could try downloading the Adobe 6.0 Reader and see if that helps. Also go to “Help” and click on “Detect and Repair”. That took care of some similar problems that I was having with the reader. (I’m not sure if that option is available with 5.0 – I’m using 6.0.)

…and, it is often easier to download Acrobat reader from somewhere like Download.com - I tried downloading it direct from the Adobe site the other day and it wanted to install a download manager program first, although it said that you could still download it without (which option I chose), but it just sat there saying “if your download doesn’t automatically commence in x seconds, click here” and clicking here took me to a hopelessly convoluted FAQ. I expect the problem was that I was behind a proxy and firewall, but downloading from Download.com just worked first time with no hassle.

Quercus Thanks, but you were right: it didn’t work but it was easy to try!

Mangeout Great site! I bookmarked it for future reference. (13,550 posts!)

rsa 5.0 doesn’t have the “detect and repair” feature. :frowning: I looked at 6.0 but it requires OSX (which I have on cd) and THAT requires you to check firmware and disable this extention, then that extention, 1000 other things and I’d just find that 6.0 couldn’t fix it anyway! OSX will have to wait for another day.

So I’m gonna wait till Monday and take the advice of GorillaMan and get it resent. (damn computers anyway! )

Thanks for all the great advice.

In the meantime, if you want to send it to me, I can try fussing with it. Can’t guarantee results, of course, but I can try. My profile email address is valid.
