I think it’s ironic that quite a few people have so much to say about offensive things people have said while lacing their comments with fucks and goddamns, both also offensive to many people, one prohibited by the ten commandments which many people hold dear. But hey, free speach right?
Having said that, they should pass a law to keep people from saying things that others find offensive. That won’t interfere with free speech because they can still say it, they will just have a penalty if they do. We should try that.
I’m all for people protecting themselves, and I do not condone what she said, I never liked her in the first place. However, I do defend her right to say whatever she wants without retribution. To me, that’s what free speech is.
I live in the deep south where I hear racist speech all the time, it’s apparently part of the DNA down here. I don’t condone it, I don’t appreciate it, I also don’t get offended by it. Why? Because I can keep myself separated from it. I don’t have to believe it just because I heard it. I don’t have to like someone who says it. I’m not required to abide by some Jethro’s world view. I don’t want to step on their free speech for one reason, I don’t want them stepping on mine.
I’ve already seen people get butthurt over the most stupid things. When a person says something like fuck her or she’s a goddamn nut or anything like that, there are plenty of people who find that offensive. I was reading a post the other day at work hoping my boss didn’t look over my shoulder and see what I was reading simply because there was so much profanity in almost every post and my boss happens to be a minister. He would find some of this highly offensive and yet there are many here, including me, that use profanity regularly. I use profanity but I refrain when in front my boss, not because he would fire me (he wouldn’t) but out of respect for his beliefs. I do the same with my parents.
I know this will probably be viewed as trolling. I’ve seen many times, especially lately, where people speak their mind and people get all bent out of shape over it. Say what you want, I don’t really care, but when people start having to limit what they say for fear of reprisal, I can’t think of that as free speech. I do not have to agree with anything anyone says but I will defend their right to say it. Carry on with the offensive profanity and useless bashing of someone that, to me at least, isn’t worth wasting my time thinking about. Like I said, I never liked her in the first place so I never considered her important enough to be an issue of any kind.
